Why Do We Post Ban Threads?

Recommended Posts

The answer is simpler than most of your realize. Since the account is suspended, there is often no way to let someone KNOW why they have been suspended, since they can't read the PM until their account is UNsuspended a week later. This way someone finds their account is locked, get on as a guest, and see the thread with their name on it.

There is also the element of warning to others, but as we've seen lately that doesn't work that well.

The Circus the threads become is up to you all. smile.gif

i agree with why they get posted..when i got suspended for 7 days i didnt know why or what was going on until i was on here has a guest and saw why i was supended..so i think it does much more good then bad when posting, atleast for the suspendee atleast that is..the fact we all come and put in our 2 cents on the person i guess it makes us all feel like were better then whoever got suspended because were all still here..lol

I have to agree with nights, when he was new here i really honestly did not like him but he took his ban, he read the rules and now i have to say mate your a good contributing member good on ya.

would this of happened if he had no idea why he was banned?

maybe not, the ban thread helped him realise a mistake and we all make mistakes, ill be damned if i dont make plenty

HEY NOW! I was just up last night watching Shaun of the Dead all night because my daughter felt she didn't need to sleep for more than 20 minutes at a time. I saw the word ban... was like baaaan.... braaaains.... pass the cricket bat that's funny! Granted I am typing this after slamming down 1 liter Dr Pepper and a pot of coffee. Just enough caffeine in my system to keep me from snoring if I doze off at work this morning.

I thought I was doing the ban threads because it was fun for me. This entire thing is all about me, me, me. Didn't you all know that? joking. Seriously though, I post ban threads because 1. I think it give a warning out the the rest of the community that we the MUST follow the rules or they will get the same treatment as well as letting others know that the person has been suspended incase they were trying to make a deal with them or so forth, and 2. so the community knows I am trying to do my job the best I can and I'm not just sitting on my ass doing nothing.

I don't think I got a ban thread when i took my vacation, oh well, I'm sure everyone would have just said "he doesn't contribute anyway" or "He's an asshole"

yep that was what i was thinking...

i wouldn't even be talking to you, but your love for Nakhla makes you tolerable.

I understand the logic behind it. I understand asshats need to be slapped. I understand the need to keep decorum and prevent nht references. But I find it annoying to see umpteen posts about people getting banned. To tell the truth, this has me checking in on the forum much less. Before that it had me posting less, just out of fear of getting banned. It almost seems like a good way to get everyone working together, albeit to bash on someone. I don't find it entertaining. How about having a single ban thread and post in that thread only?

the single ban thread is a good idea, but eiter way..you know what the thread is about when its posted..so if you dont care for it just dont click it move to the next subject..no one is forcing you to read it smile.gif

ban threads are fun, and they unite the forum members in a way thats unequaled on another forum.
Seriously, you show me another forum where when someone breakes the rules the next 5 posters are telling someone to edit thier post or report themselves. you won't find it.Guarenteed!

I can see smoke eater's point. I think that some of the posts people put on ban threads are in bad taste. Perhaps we could make a thread for each ban, but lock it, so people couldn't reply. If the intent of the thread is to inform the people they were banned, then a locked thread would suffice. The idea of one thread for all the bans is good, too. Maybe even sticky it. Make it repliable by mods and admins, but read-only for regular members.

I won't doubt that it brings people together, but so did witch burnings. Do we alienate members and make them not want to come back after their ban? Do the gloating and rude replies on the threads make them feel unwelcome? Some people only made a simple one-time mistake. They might have made a great member. We might lose a new member to our togetherness. Togetherness isn't about excluding others, secret handshakes and closed arcane orders...its about being open and welcoming; making people feel part of a community.

Just my thoughts.
