Tobacco Limit Through Airports?

Recommended Posts

I'm just wondering, is there a limit on how much tobacco you can bring in your checked luggage when flying within the US? I thought customs/duties only applied to international travel.

More specifically, I'm flying from CA to HI...

any and all help would be appreciated.

flying within the country there is no such thing as customs, only security checks. customs only applies internationally.
once its in the country its in, you can move it around all you want.

k, that's what i was thinking...i just didn't know if it'd seem odd to be carrying around 40lbs of shisha in your luggage.

as long as its not a security threat/illegal its fine, iv seen MORE weirder things being carried like a friend who checked in a box with frozen meat.. in a flight across canada..

40lbs? That is the max weight limit for combined carry-ons so expect to have to check it in. Even then, you will likely have to pay an excessive weight fee unless you haven't packed anything else with it and have a lightweight suitcase. In addition to charges for checking in baggage, most carriers charge a ~$50 fee for checked baggage over 50lbs and ~$100 for over 70lbs up to 100lbs.

I can't remember which airlines it was, but they wanted to charge me $100 for being 5 pounds over at 55 pounds. I only had one bag, so I asked them how much for checking a second bad? They said $40. That made no sense... I could go get a 2nd bag and fill it up with another 45 pounds, and save $60 for not carrying a single that's 5 pounds over.

You can ship 6 Kg for $13 Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes through the Post Office. With insurance, its around $14.

if there's really no customs, then its free to just bring it back from San Diego.... happy.gif

what do you mean, charge me for the suitcase?

do you have you have pay a fee to take suitcases on domestic flights now?

Many airlines charge for checked baggage now.

Its 15 for the first bag and 25 for the second. and it if passes a certain wait the price increases.

seriously? that's messed up. i can see it now:

Check-in Person: oh, you're going on a two week vacation to Florida?....have fun...
Passenger: Yeah, it'll be great. Can I check in my baggage?
Check-in Person: Sure, that's $25.
Passenger: WTF? I'm basically paying a ticket for my clothes and toiletries? That's dumb. What am I supposed to wear when I get to Florida?
Check-in: Well, I guess you can use the $25 you saved to buy new clothes in Florida....have a nice day! Edited by Arcane

I think it is different for all airlines. My dad flies on business trips all the time and he said each one is diff. He said one of the airlines actually charges you more to check your bags in at the airport than if you check them in online before you come.

Yeah, they are all different. I think the most lenient in CA is Southwest with their baggage.

I fly all the time for business trips. Some charge and others don't.
Delta, United and Alaska Airlines are the worst so far in CA.

Check their websites to see what they charge there first. DelSol is right. They sometimes have better rates online then when you show up.

Also, that backpack must be able to fit easily in the overhead otherwise you will be charged. And be careful what you put in there. One wrong thing and you'll have to dump it.

Out of curiousity, where are you flying out of?
I've flown out of most of the airports in the US. Every single major one in CA. I could tell you what the best way to fly would be depending on the airport/airline.

US, Continental and Hawaiian are the only ones I've taken to Hawaii.
Many others fly in though. I can think of half a dozen off the top of my head...
American, Continental, Hawaiian, United, Delta, USairways and I think Alaska Airlines goes in also.
Out of those...
USairways charges 30 per bag but I think they are changing this month.
Continental Charges 20 per bag 30 or so for the second.
Hawaiian was 15 for first and 25 second but i think they just changed.
United is 20 for first 30 for second now. You save 5 if you do it online. Dont go overweight on this airline unless you wanna pay an arm and a leg.
Delta is the same if I remember correctly. 20 and 30 for second. Save 5 online.
Alaska is the killer. They have the 15 for first and 25 for second rule but their scales are always off. I hit the Southwest scale and checked for 35lb once and had to change flights to alaska airlines so pulled my bag and switched and they said it was 52lbs so I had to pay $100. Thats a lot of money all because their scales were off. It's happened more then once. Be carefull with them.
