innienippie
this past friday i bought my first hookah and i was just wondering how to not have the tobacco at the top of the bowl get burnt. i have been thinking of usingthe opposite side of the screen so the coal is higher off the bowl but havent tried it out yet. Twisted
Try moving your coals as close to the edge as you can without them falling of. When you first start smoking the bowl, give it a few minutes before you actually take the first drag so the tobacco warms up.
the_cool
Use foil dude!
Zinite
Use foil. I assume you're using a disc quick light. Cut it up in halves or thirds and spread them on the edge of the bowl.

Arcane
i'd suggest foil too...if you have to use the screen for some reason, you should be able to use it any way and get it to smoke. i'd had to use my screen twice when i ran out of foil...AF Esk Apple and Nakhla DA...both did well with the screen. it's probably your heat management that you need to tweak. Genie
The top of the bowl is going to get crispy nearly every time, as long as the rest of the bowl is doing well, don't worry about it. If it's burning to the point of tasting burnt.... then you have a problem.Best tip I've gotten is to crinkle the foil up before putting it on the bowl. Lifts the coals up a bit by creating little hills for the coals to sit on.Don't know what kind of bowl you use. On my bowls that came with screens I snipped the tabs off, turn the screen upside down (to lift it higher), then put a layer of heavy duty foil over it, wrapped tight around the bowl and poke the holes.Double up on your foil and/or switch foil and/or crinkle the foil. A lot of it depends on the bowl and the type of shisha you are using. Also, I use three coals to heat things up then frequently take one off after it's going good. Again, it depends on the bowl and the shisha. I learned to fluff the shisha up good in the bowl using a toothpick to create lots of air pockets then also use the toothpicks to poke holes through the shisha so the heat can get down to the bottom of the bowl. Really helps.
hookah hippie
you should definitely follow the foil suggestion
Genie
Sorry, you DID mention a screen and I skimmed over it. Yes, for me, turning it upside down was a big help. But smoking with the screen alone has never been successful for me. I always wrap it in foil.
Sonthert
Yeah, I think you'll find the tobacco gets dried out either way. You can see it with a screen. With foil, its hidden.
