Packing Tangiers

Recommended Posts

I've changed the way I pack tangiers from the beginning days and I took some shots for mattarios. This technique works best for me. Some of the pictures are blurry and its kind of hard to see what im doing but i'll try to explain it.

Start with your tub, fork and bowl (Small phunnel in this case)

I scoop through the tobacco and even it out a bit on top

Now I clean up the sides of the bowl, and use the side of the fork to push down the edge of the tobacco on the edge of the inner part of the bowl to compress the very edge down. This will fluff up the middle and make it look like entirely too much tobacco but do not panic.

My camera work is abbysmal. Here is another shot

Now I take the foil and put it on the bowl. I push down with my palm and spin the bowl. This compresses the tobacco; I don't push as hard as possible, just to the point where the foil does not go down anymore by itself without extra force.

The result after taking the foil off

Holes in the foil

My kpeach pipe waiting for some loving

I think this is more coal than Eric recommends for a small but it works for me. its possible 3 coals closer to the middle may work just as well

well i try to do it the same way eric does. this happens to work for me, im not sure if its any different than the way eric does it to be honest. although i do use toothpicks for the holes.

Looks good, Scoop. That's exactly how I do it, but I use the oyster fork for holes. It looked like you use a toothpick to poke them, no? Also, while doing the "foil test" The main point is really to check how much tobacco you have in the bowl and make sure it isn't too dense or not dense enough. But while doing it, the point of spinning the foil in a circular motion is to make sure the tobacco is evenly distributed throughout the bowl. Even if you have the right amount of tobacco in the bowl, I find that it smokes and burns better when it is evenly distributed. It looks like you did a good job of it, I'm just clarifying a little.

Also, I'm not saying the shisha shouldn't be touching the foil, because it should. All of my bowls end up with the tobacco slightly pushing up against the foil. I usually let the bowl sit for about 5 minutes after poking holes to let the tobacco settle and "decompress" itself.

I use 3 fully lit coconaras on a small phunnel of OG tangiers and it smokes wonderfully. I've always been baffled when I read about folks scoring and breaking cocos in half, using maybe 1.5 coals. Nice to see someone using comparable amounts of heat

Tangiers is heat sensitive for most people. Just because you can use 2 or 3 or 4 doesnt mean the rest of us can. If I even use slightly more than 2 coals, it burns in a small. 2 is usually spot on. But with CH Cocos if I use any more than 1.5 coals, it burns because the CH ones put out more heat. It's just different things work for different people and different climates.

Agreed. If I use a full coco it will burn, but if I split it up, it does fine. Usually use 1.5 to 2 coals split.
