redjako
I had to take some pictures as I could not figure out the consistency of the foil test...in a later video, ill show how what I thought was well packed, was actually overpacked, where gob and streamers of juices drizzled out the foil edges of the bowl in a 5 hour session...that session wasn't even overly enjoyable.I edit a different 6 hour session, more "underpacked" looking on the foil test, but it was great. So these pictures will show the test overpacked, then "bueno" packed, plus pictures.NOTESecond quarter is ABOVE the rim, hence I feel it is overpacked (yet this is typically a bowl I would smoke, but, I've seen these bowls bubble over in juice). redjako
Scraped some off and:NOW THIS LOOKS under packed to me, but I tested with some quarters (haha)
redjako
Quarters hit the edge, not over or below. So the bowl should be good

redjako
Four rounds later:More pictures at the blog, xlhookah.wordpress.comHopefully that helps, I believe with the foil test Eric mentioned in his Acclimation issues thread that you use the foil test to see the point where the tobacco will not be compressed any further. Ergo, you need to compress it down with the foil pretty handily and see where it "sponges" back up, wherein, you want it slightly below the rim, or two quarters widths (1/2 CM, a few MM).Cheers. kdkhookah
if those are exotcas he's using then i understand why he has four. I use three to four at a time on a small bowl cause they get no where close to as hot as cocos. If I use cocos I only use 1.5 - 2 pieces.

If I use cocos I only use 1.5 - 2 pieces.Exxxactly..lol at the replies. Its pieces of Exotica's.I actually moved one piece of those coals OFF the bowl and placed the three pieces (roughly 1/2" pieces) towards the center.Http://xlhookah.blogspot.com for more pictures (I took a crap load of them). This "foil test" was just out of watching Eric's video, and pouring over his last few hundred posts through the search function over the last few weeks (I like gathering / analyzing data). My own foil test is mainly just Eric and his little nuggets of wisdom1) He talks about compressing down the shisha dense too the packaging it came in (which is super dense)2) Uses the foil test, compressing the shisha even further, until it can't be packed anymore with a width of...3) Two quarter widths..I've never tried to measure the width of the two-quarters before, so yesterday I thought I would actually try to USE TWO DAMN QUARTERS.Hence, I see that my bowls which I thought were Underpacked, were actually just right. The first pictures show the second quarter hanging OFF the bowl, which should = overpacked. However, I am using a Medium Phunnel, while Eric mostly uses Larges (my understanding).Either way, smoking a bowl packed like the first, overpacked one, has resulted in Tangiers juice dripping out the sides, with NOTICABLE less smoke, and less flavor. Also note, I never take pictures nor video of shitty sessions, or harsh smoke I need voluminous smoke, and monster flavor or I won't smoke it.By the fourth round I needed to leave, and only smoked it roughly 20 minutes. So: ~40, 40, 40, 20 minutes all = a session ~2:20 hours. Exotica's are NOTICABLY less hot then coco's..I use 2-2.5 coco's split in half, all the way down to 1.0 coco's depending on the bowl.Cheers
hookah hippie
Seems like it worked out pretty welldid you say you had two quarter widths on the small for the foil test?
redjako
Small phunnel? No, I have a medium phunnel..I was saying I am unsure whether Eric would modify his "2 quarters width" rule for phunnels other then a large.I was saying that the first set of pictures shows (badly, bad camera shot) that the second quarter is hanging over the rim, while the second group (which I foiled) shows the quarters UP to the outter lip of the phunnel, not below or above.I have found this method to be the MOST consistent in great long sessions (just did another one tonight).I am a daily hookah smoker, almost exclusively (with 20% being Al Fakhr) Tangiers in OG (mostly) and Lucid. So I have quite a bit of bowl packing time to experiment..this has worked out the best.Cheers. kdkhookah
Luckily I read this before I started smoking tonight. I've been watching the Hookah John / Eric video do get a good idea about how Tangiers should be packed. I've been guessing about the depth from the edge of the bowl using the foil test, but I was never 100% sure on it. My sessions before haven't been horrible, and I have been doing it at about one quarter depth, as I think I have read in the acclimation post. I may have misread on that. This time I actually got out two quarters and used them to measure. So far it seem to be going really well. I might have to use this method every time I pack a bowl now. Oh and you're videos have helped me as well, so thanks.
