Charley
Its possible it was the fasting itself if the person was already malnourished as that alone can cause seizures. (and i say can because it can but not always.)
liquidglass
I'm with Charley. There's no way a bit of hookah caused a seizure. It sounds like their body was craving nourishment and when it got none, it rebelled. Especially by smoking hookah which would dehydrate the body further. Scrappydoo
I have fasted every day so far and smoke shisha almost every night with no problem. See, for Ramadan fasting, we don't eat all day but we do as soon as the sun goes down, so no one gets very "malnourished." I think he probably had an underlying medical problem, was dehydrated and the shisha made it worse. JMO!

kdkhookah
As for the seizure, there's no way only smoking hookah did it. Hookah may have been a factor, but it wasn't the main cause. I mean if it was hookah alone, I'm sure we'd all be aware of it. Plus, we'd see a lot of post that would look like this: "So, I just wanted to let you guys know I'm smoking right now and the flavor and clouds are great. I'm so excited to finally got Tangilefjlwkkjdc knlwdlkjfbcl ojkdflkjb.wfvdlkjdclkjblkjsdablslknlkb jbcloedwjpwoiosjdnfc-j9uiwr-t89rufn-d2dcmdu dr230u9h2feidcjdiopnepui9fwdoiubodcobcj3w pxoi3rubc uridnch ...." ,etc.As far as hookah and ED, I've never noticed any type of effects. Could be a long term effect, don't know. Could just be that so many people smoke it when they're young and by the time they're smoking it when they're older, their body just decides to naturally start having ED. But hookah is blamed. Because what guy wants to admit that his body naturally did that?

Because what guy wants to admit that his body naturally did that?I was being facetious You can say "My friend was smoking hookah and he had a seizure, therefore hookah causes seizures". It doesn't work like that. I believe the relevant quote is "correlation does not imply causation". Just because two events happened at the same time, in this cause a seizure occurring during a hookah session, does not mean that the hookah was the cause of the seizure. Here's a good graphic that illustrates this point:As you can see here, the less pirates there are in the world, the higher the average global temperature. Therefore, a lack of pirates is causing global warming.

supersubby
haha thanks zinite that totally made sense. I know the hookah had no direct correlation with the seizure, but the fact that the doctor told the kid 'your hookah smoking gave you a seizure' really irritates me. its just more people putting a negative light on hookah or blaming it. My doc she understands, last time i went in for a check she asked the regular questions, "Do you smoke?" I replied yes hookah, she laughed and said " that doesn't count" and went on about her business.its just really lame that now my friends telling me to cut down on smoking and its like really? im not an idiot like this guy who doesn't know how to pack a bowl and il sit there smoking out of an egyptian head for 3 hours using starlight qls while im at it. gr." newjacksm
I have epilepsy... I smoke Hookah and never had a seizure while smoking hookah. End case...P.s. I have only had 2 seizures from when I was diagnosed with epilepsy which was when I was 16 when I started getting them. I started smoking Hookah a lot when I was 18. I am 21 now.I would say there is no relevance to smoking hookah and seizures.ALTHOUGH there might be in it that may trigger some one differently, I highly doubt it though. My seizures are triggered by being fatigued and not getting any sleep. newjacksm
If you want to find out why your friend had a seizure by the way. Its good to start out that she had nothing to eat and she might have a gene in her body that just triggers off seizures when she doesn't eat. Sort of like me when I get lack of sleep and being fatigued. There is a lot of medications out there that help with seizures though so you don't have to worry about things like this and live a normal life. Svaals
I've never heard of nicotine alone causing a seizure. There are a lot of things that can lower your "seizure threshold". Stimulants, lack of sleep, lack of food, dehydration, loud noises, flashing lights. My friend has a lot of seizures (he thinks) due to overhead fluorescent lights (like the ones in offices); especially older bulbs flash very rapidly... most people don't notice it, but it sets him off.As said before, correlation is not causation. It's a slippery slope to non-science (Hello anti-vaxers). Edited September 7, 2009 by Svaals

redjako
Discuss...that correlation != causation, moreso, this could be an argument of "they were going to have a seizure no matter what the variable, X (hookah) just happened to be their"
Sonthert
It bears watching, although I would doubt the hookah caused it. Religious superstition for the fail.
