StreetBob
I'm understanding that the Phunnel and Tangiers go hand in hand.... but when your gonna pack something other than Tangiers, do you still reach for the phunnel? If yes, is the heat management different for non-Tangiers in the phunnel than with Tangiers?
JOE
yes, i always use my phunnel no matter what the tobacco is. yes the heat management is different.
Amn_sinclair
i always use my phunnel and will go right back to using it as soon as i get a new one. Last one took a dive. U do have to manage the heat different imo the sessions are so much longer
Genie
I've never smoked Tangiers (yet) but I nearly always use a phunnel. It's just an awesome bowl. Can't compare heat management with it to using Tangiers though, as I have no experience. I smoke Hydro, Nakhla, AF, and a little Fantasia.I generally lay three Shishaco natural coals or three chunks of Stargate naturals on mine, put the wind cover on it until it gets good and hot and is smoking nicely then I can usually take one of the coals off for awhile, only adding it back once the bowl needs more heat again. I nearly always keep the wind cover on, the smoke tells me quick if it needs to come off though. Haven't burned any shisha since the first week I got the phunnel and never have wasted shisha at the end of a session.

Yes you can use the phunnel for whatever the hell you want....(smoking wise, dont get creative on me.)As you play around with different brands and bowl designs, youll learn what setup you prefer.Search around for other topics about this, its been discussed before but i cant remember where.(if i find it ill add it later)Dont feel hesitant to ask any other questions you may have, after all were here to help.Edit:This should help Edited September 14, 2009 by tpatt90
delSol_si
The phunnel is so much easier to smoke out of. My phunnel took a dive last night so I busted out my egyptian tonight and it just wasn't the same, I burned the shit out of the shisha and wasn't able to get nearly as good of smoke. Heat management on the phunnel is so much easier. Plus the phunnel makes the flavor soo much better and helps to keep the juices from dripping down into the stem. Especially if I'm out at some social function trying to be nice and share my hookah, don't want to risk a phunnel for a bunch of people who've never smoked hookah before anyway. Arcane
i guess it kinda depends...normally i use nakhla in an egyptian...sometimes i'll reach for the mini phunnel, but its not a regular thing for me.

Also, if I'm setting up my hookah at a party I announce that if anyone breaks my phunnel I expect $25. So I can get a new one shipped from HJ. Haha. I don't mind taking my wind cover bowls to social events though. They're so handy. And if one breaks, no biggie. At least the wind cover portion is still usable. norcalsmoker
I honestly use my egyptian bowl 90% of the time I smoke. I Dont like smoking for over 45 min to an hour at a time so the phunnels just aren't that useful to me... only on rare occasions. I smoke mostly nakhla and my sessions are just as good in the egyptian as they are in the phunnel.

trouts
Related question:I'd love a phunnel, but I've always avoided one and stuck unadventurously to egyptians because I've seen a lot of people saying phunnels are too much for one person to smoke. I do smoke with other people, but not too often (we normally hit a bar instead of using my pipe!) - would the phunnel be overkill on its own?Or, do they do a mini suitable for one person? Arcane
it really depends on how long you smoke normally...if you hit the 2-3 hour range, a small phunnel will be good for you. if you're only a 45min to 1 hour smoker....i'd stick with the egyptian. there's nothing wrong with the egyptian bowls in the first place. ezxen
Would you pack a funnel the same way as tangires with non tangires tobacco ?
r1v3th3ad
depends from person to person...most people pack tangiers tight in a phunnel, I occasionally pack it loose and it smokes better...same goes for when I pack nakhla...sometime I pack it tight as can be(as most do) and sometimes I give it a fluffy pack...I find with fluffy packs I get more flavor and dont waste as much shisha when the bowl is dead

They claim it's a large phunnel (I asked them about it via email) but I've never gotten more than a 45 minute to one hour smoke using mine. I think it's really a medium. I use my phunnels almost exclusively and nearly always smoke alone. Hookah-Life has small, medium, and large phunnels. I don't smoke Tangiers (yet), mostly herbal shishas, Nakhla, AF, and a few other brands. One 50 gram pack of shisha usually lasts me three bowls if I'm using it in a Phunnel. I pack my shisha light and fluffy and always over the rim.

I've tried packing Nakhla more densely (several times, and using various techniques) as so many insist is the way to go, but I just end up with a bunch of wasted shisha. Have yet to figure out how to pack it tightly and have it last.
Arcane
What do you mean by wasted shisha? are you just not smoking long enough to use up all the tobacco? or does the bowl lose flavor after a while even though there is still moist tobacco at the bottom?if you're not smoking long enough....i'd stick to your method. 1 hour seems like a normal session for most people..if you're trying to get longer sessions, but cant seem to pull any flavor after an hour...then you may be packing too densely....but im not quite sure on that. Yes to the second. Once the top half has baked in a densely packed bowl (for me) the bottom half stops producing (either it's been skanked by the top baked half or the heat just isn't getting to it, I don't know which) and I don't get any flavor.
