Finally Got My Hookah W/ Pics!

Recommended Posts

Well the knock on the door finally came from the UPS guy and my hookah was finally here! Like I stated earlier I had no idea what hookah I was getting due to South Smoke upgrading me. I ordered the Mya Orb and got upgraded to the Mya Cosmos. I couldn't be happier! Just had my first smoke with it using Al Fakher Grape. Can't say I was overly impressed with the grape, but I imagine some of the lack of flavor is due to my rookie-ness. I may try to regulate the heat a bit better by using one Exotica coal instead of two and rotated it a bit more often. I had it going good for a while with some decent clouds of smoke. I also caught a bit of a buzz, but I'm not a smoker so that isn't much of a surprise to me. I definitely burned the top layer of shisha after a while, so I braved the high temps, fluffed up the shisha a bit more and got rid of most of the charred stuff, then replaced the remaining coals and finished it off. Seemed to work well enough. I used water and ice in the vase. Overall a great investment and I look forward to more good sessions, experimentation and learning as I go! Hopefully the pictures work! Also, I have no real idea on how to clean these things. Any advice is appreciated. I was dumb and didn't buy the cleaning brushes. If I really need them I can run out and buy some this evening, but am hoping to save a little $$ right now so any tips or tricks to clean without the brushes?

That's why you didn't have a lot of flavor. The ice makes the smoke thicker but weakens the flavor.

Interesting. I'll have to give a it a try with just water. Does water temp matter?

For me, good fluffing is key with AF. I didn't care for the grape at all. Once I've sprinkled the AF in, I always fluff it with a toothpick then work a few holes through the shisha to insure the heat works it's way to the bottom of the bowl.

A good rinse should keep your hookah clean enough for awhile, but at some point you're going to have to use a brush to get out residue. There are video tutorials on homemade stem brushes.

The vase can be easily cleaned out with water, lemon juice, and baking soda. You'll need a brush for it eventually though.

As for water temperature, tepid water or water with a few ice cubes, not too many, is sufficient. Too cold and you definitely kill the flavor.

On those acrylic vases I've heard people say to NEVER drop ice cubes in it unless you've put water in it first. People have said that dropping ice cubes in it without water can cause them to crack.

I just use a hot water rinse on the MYA bowls. A thumbnail if they get a bit crusty! Consider a couple different bowls for extreme flavors or tobacco/bagasse shishas. It's a pipe bowl afterall and should acquire some "history" and coloring.
