Victim026
Just stopped by my local shop to pick up some AF, for years they have retailed it for between $12-14 a tub but no more then that. Tonite I went in and the owner said he had what I wanted in stock but that taxes had just gone up on tobacco and the price is now $24.99. I said no thanks, but had a long convo with him about prices, he was utterly surprised that everywhere online was still retailing for cheaper and told me to order from them. I've known this guy for years and he has no reason at all to lie about taxes, I mean I shop there enough for him to hand me a freebie every so often. SO does anyone know anything about some tax increase that just went through in the last 2-3 weeks? He said it works out to $1 per 10g of shisha now with the new taxes. Hobocans
Jersey is the same way: I don't think they ever charge tax on hookah tobacco. One guy I think upped the price and called it tax, but I'm pretty sure that extra coin wasn't going to the NJ Department of Treasury
Genie
Oh, jeez. This sucks. Isn't HS out of Austin? And there's Texas Hookah too. There was $3.65 tax added to the order I placed from HS a week and a half ago which included 450 grams of shisha and $5.75 tax added to my HookahLounge order which included 800 grams of shisha and I'm pretty sure the HL order was shipped from Texas. Hmm, maybe online vendors can work around that new tax somehow?

nidal105
So in the US, tobacco taxes are regulated by the States? If trade and commerce between the States is free then you could easily get around the taxes by ordering online from the other States. Someone correct me if i'm wrong... mushrat
Daaamn. My prices for a 250 went up about a buck from the new NC taxes. I of course expect them to raise that again the first chance they get mind you.

smokinglassworks
Social Smoke is in Texas, but when shipping outside of the state they do not have to charge the texas tobacco. It should only affect those of us who live here, although I wouldn't be surprised to see other states follow suit. I am not sure about ordering on the internet and having it shipped to Texas, but I'd bet they will find a way to get there tax money. I own a store that sells a lot of shisha and this is really going to hurt my customer and my store. I am kind of waiting to see if other stores are really going to try to pass all of this on to the customer.

I have been out of a job for some time now so no buying for me sadly) ,but when you buy from the lounge it was cheaper than it used to.i cant say what kind of hike the shop has but the lounge used to sell coals for $15 even now they are like $12.50 or so i found it a little odd, but i'm not mad Edited September 21, 2009 by tofat2runfast
Amn_sinclair
its times like these that im happy to be in the military lol. I dont have to pay tax on stuff i buy on base, if i buy something from the german economy i can usually take a form with me and get the german tax taken off of it, and its like 19% tax rate for germany, im sure if they start taxing stuff on line i can find a way around it lol

Sonthert
I'm under the impression, Dr. B, that if you buy a Wyoming tax-paid product and then resell it in Nebraska, you have to pay the full Nebraska tax, too. If you are a distributor and have the ability to pay (or get refunds) on excise taxes for the state inquestion (Wyoming, in this case), you can deduct it and get a refund. On the other hand, if Nebraska's tax is 20% higher than Wyoming's tax, that doesn't mean you only have to pay the 20% difference. Nebraska does not care if the tobacco was tax-paid in Florida, California, Alaska, or tax-unpaid. Taxes paid on things in other states have no bearing on a separate state. Its likely the net effect is just paying the difference if they received it tax paid, but that is not truly the case in real terms. Nebraska might get real upset if you didn't pay the taxes in Nebraska. Saying you gave the money already to Wyoming isn't going to make them happy or raise their revenues. Bad news about the taxes in Texas, man. Its a trend all over the USA. Some states banned delivery of tobacco products to retail customers (to avoid tax problems entirely). Including Montana, Washington, and Utah. Look for other states to raise our taxes and ban internet sales similarly.

Sonthert
Yeah, as far as I know, here is the current list:MontanaUtahWashington**Washington had an amendment floating around to exempt pipe tobacco from the law, which would cover hookah tobacco.
