NIGHTS OF BAGHDAD
ok this may not be a trend, but ive seen it used latly in vids when lighting natural coals on the $10 coil burners..people put really tiny fans to blow on coals to light faster..how big of an advantage is this? because i dont have one of those tiny fans but i can get one from cvs i just wana know if its worth and im not just playin with my crank...lol
Hookie The Hookah
Patience is a virtue. The difference between 8 minutes and 10 is pretty trivial imo.

FamiliarJoe
...idk. I personally think fans speed up the process alot.
annual
or just put a wind cover on top of the coals, should be about the same time to light.
Esteins23
I tend to use a fan when I heat up coals and in my opinion it goes significantly faster.
Purplepotatoe
I constantly have a AC going over my coal burner. I notice them taking a little bit longer to start. After they do start I they seem to go a bit faster, but taking the longer start into consideration it might be about the same.
Bulldog_916
I think this might make the coal wear down faster. I've noticed that when there's wind and I'm lighting coals, they ash more when I take them off the burner. You might actually be making your coals last a shorter period of time. AmunRa
The fan will circulate the air, so it will speed up the process. But I don't think it will speed up the process appreciably. Besides, blowing the ash all over the place makes more of a mess that I'd care to clean up. (I lite mine indoors.)
JOE
yes, the fan speeds it up, but like amun said, sparks and ash will fly, if i want my coals done super fast i will throw my windcover over them on the coil.. and then not touch it for like a day
hookah hippie
it will make it light faster but not by much and it makes a mess so I don't bother
ih303
I started using a small fan at the lounge I work at because I got a batch of CH coals that seemed to smoke a lot more than usual. (When you have a dozen coals on a burner indoors, and all of them are smoking, it gets real bad real fast.) Anyway, I noticed it made the smoke disseminate and coals light faster but created quite a mess. So I started to do it a bit differently.I actually turned the fan away from the coals so it would pull rather than push the smoke away and draw a gentler current of air over the coals. This really helped out with the ash. The only problem I had with that was the fan would get so hot from continuously drawing hot air from the burner/coals, some of the plastic pieces on the back began to warp.Ultimately, I thought it was a success. Faster, less concentrated smoke with the bonus of faster lighting coals. Perfect!
Stuie
Downside I see is every now and then with all coals there will be a chance that the fan blows off a tiny bit of lit coal and ash, slowly turning the surface adjacent to where you light coals into a Swiss Cheese look. Zyram
In my experience they do light faster, and with a fan I don't have to turn the coals because it gets the whole thing hot with the air going around it. I don't use one on a regular basis, but if I'm in a rush I will use one, first tested it with a hair dryer, but yea, it will spread the ash so if you use it, try it in a place that's easy to clean and ok to get dirty.-Z
