EAK1791
I was just wondering if using a soda can alcohol stove (like this: http://www.hikingforums.net/forums/diy-gea...-can-stove.html ) would work for natural coals. (ShishaCo brand, in particular)
Zinite
Yup, you just need some sort of grate so that the coals are sitting about 1 to two inches above the bottom of the flame (about a CM above the tip of the flame)
EAK1791
Thanks!Being a broke college kid, and living in a dorm with no stove, it was really the only choice I have to light naturals.
indian_villager
I am in the same position so I bought a blow torch from Home Depot for $
kdkhookah
As said many times before, Walgreen's. Ten dollars.http://www.walgreens.com/store/store/produ...p?id=prod350527But if you just want to see the flames, go for it. I have thought about making one just to do it. Not for hookah purposes though. Here's one of the posts on the single coil burner: http://www.hookahforum.com/?showtopic=32419

sburke15
I have to smoke outside, and we can't store propane in the dorms so I have to use an alchohol stove. It works alright, a windcover and a a good coal stand would probably be helpful . It takes a while and It generally takes some blowing on the coal to get it going completly, but it works. I'd recomend an updraft/chimney style stove becuase it directs the heat upward better, instead of spreading it out like the one you linked. Bulldog_916
You can also go to quicklights. I know naturals are damn good, but Golden Quicklights are really good for the price and portability.
chinamon
i dont think an alcohol burner would be very effective (compared to other options) because alcohol has a very low burning temperature.
Cerritus
Alcohol burners work great, but here's a much easier one to make that works fine.Burner

cptbjorn
I've tested these kinds of stoves pretty extensively while backpacking and the best/hottest/easiest one I made used a guinness can and a regular pepsi can. It can boil a little pot of water at 8,000 feet and below freezing and I'm sure it could light a couple coals with the right screen to hold them in the hot part of the flames. The website has gone down since i built mine a couple years ago but I found it archived here. Cerritus
I just tried it with a stove made from two monster cans and it lit a quarter of an exotica in about 3 minutes. These things are awesome.
