Had It With Af Golden Esk!

I can not get this shit smoking for the life of me. I haven't had internet access to post pictures of my new hookah but i got a 32 inch KM heart of lion, Smokes AWESOME. I got HUGE clouds with saalaam (tobacco free) that came with it, it was nuts. Although i did run into the foil sticking to the phunnel problem so i made a few of my own tea light scalli's, the design is hard to explain but i basically made it smaller then others. My small tang phunnel arrived as well as my 250 g of mizo guava, 250 g of golden esk (nightmare) and some coco's. I was eager to try the golden esk it was my first time. I sprinkled it into the bowl nicely around my small scalli mod and made sure it was barely under the rim, 1 sheet of HD foil with 3 rings of holes tack sized and some holes inbetween. I believe the first time i used 2 full coals, smoked it, lasted about 10 minutes and tasted horrible, i roated the coals every 5 or so minutes, nothng. 2nd bowl of AF i packed in not so much maybe to refrain it from burning (dumb idea) i cut the coals in halves and used 3 in a pyramid formation. Had such a huge buzz it made me sick. Less tobacco= bad. 3rd bowl i thought i had it down, i read some posts on here about packing it in above rim and pushing it down a bit but not too hard so i did this, same tinfoil set up and i also had my mod in. 3 halves of coco's ontop in a pyramid formation, took about 3 minutes for it to start up and it gave me weak thin smoke so i put another halve on and it just started tasting horrible again. In order to get big smoke its like i need to drown my bowl in coco's but then ill just get harshnessand ruin the flavor. I gave up on that bowl, threw it out, packed some mizo guava and it was a white out. Perfect session lasted a couple hours and could of lasted more but my friend didnt want to smoke anymore. What am i doing wrong with this AF?? I'm frustrated as hell.

If you're using tacks for your holes, make sure you have alot of them or it tends to burn AF.

I am not a big AF Smoker I got some Esk Apple and Mint. But Usually small phunnel packed full, but not overpacked and 2 Cocos always works well for me.

Personally I never "sprinkle" I pick up with 3 finger and drop. Go about 1/4 inch over the rim and push it down with the foil below the rim and i use a fumari poker for my holes, all over.

what i do with packing my small phunnel (no mod) with AF is...

sprinkle tobacco in to bowl until it is about 1/4" above the rim
apply foil tightly (the foil will pack down the tobacco a little automatically)
poke lots of holes with a toothpick
use two CH coals (or two coconara)

it will take a few minutes for the bowl to warm up but once it does... wooooo

I read this post you made on someone else's topic too and im scared to try it! it seems like using the tinfoil to push the AF down would make it touch the tinfoil alot and wouldnt that mean burning it?

If you are tightening the foil so it is 100% flat you should have no problems with the hole being covered...

And im also using a mod i created myself out of a tea light. Its hard to explain what i did but it is smaller and just has a cross shape of metal ontop

I'm supriesed so many people think that the foil should't touch the tobacco.Yes you do have more of a chance burning it this way, but with proper heat mangment you also get a much better smoke and no burning.I think a metal screen works better than foil if your not gonna let the tobacco touch the foil.Thats just what I've experianced.

I like the golden line of AF much more than the regular and I pack it almost as densly as I do with nakhla.

nope it wont burn. its all about proper heat management.

No i dont think it is, one problem i do have with the mod is that it sticks up a tad bit and when i smoke it bounces the halves of coals around. they dont stay in one place

sounds like people are giving you advice and you refuse to try it out....why bother asking in the first place?

if you're looking for a specific answer, why don't you just tell us what you want to hear and we can say yes or no....seems better than beating around the bush.

btw, i pack it like chinamon as well and it smokes great for me.

I think the mod might be causing some problems try it without and 3 cocos are the max i would use on the bowl just let it heat up for a min or two even throw on a windcover for the first few pulls to heat everything up.

As long as the shisha smells good when you put it in, and your coals are fully lit when you throw them on you should be fine. Always have to let it heat up though because AF comes doused in juices.

Also I use a toothpick for my holes, 3 rings with a few places filled in with holes and smokes great. I used to use a tack a long time ago but I found the toothpick seems to work more effectively.

yeah, so basically pack it high enough to where the foil doesnt cover the hole? Another thing is i light my coco's on the wallgreens stove for 10 minutes (until no black and red hot) and i notice when i put them on the bowl and smoke awhile if i flip them over the side sitting on the bowl is black. normal?

When i sold my other hookahs i sold the bowls with them, the bowl that came with my km can probably hold 1/2 g of tobacco. its literally almost flat

I really hate to poke holes in the middle, the draw just sucks for me. But ill try it out!

The bowl that came with your KM should be great with AF it should hold about 10-15 grams tobacco.Just use the overpack method this is how wide shallow egyptian bowls are meant to be used and it works awsome.
Just pile on the AF in a nice mound so that its over the rim and creates a nice mound then place foil over the top and gently press it down but you don't want it too tight and it should still make a little mound under the foil.Poke your holes and blow back through the bowl to make sure you got decent airflow.You might have to poke up back threw the holes with a bamboo skewer or other long pointy object to get better airflow.Also since your using coconaras I suggest using 2 layers of foil because they burn so hot.Fire up 2 coals and see how she goes.
