Burning

I keep burning the top layer of my shisha. I try to keep my coals on the outer edge as much as possible so not to burn it, but for the most part I always end up burning the top layer and not getting to the bottom layer very much.

I'm using Al Fakher shisha in a myriad of flavors. Exotica easy lights or whatever they are called. Is it my packing? I pack it real loose and just to the rim of the bowl. It gets a little harsh when the smoke starts going thick. I can handle it but would like a bit more flavor aside from the burnt flavor. Any ideas?

how many coals and is it a standard egyptian bowl?

Either use more tobacco or less coal. Another way to moderate the quicklights is to break them into smaller pieces before lighting (1/2s 1/3s, 1/4s, whatever).

I've been using two coals. Tried it with just one but couldn't get enough heat. I'll try breaking them in half and lining the rim of the bowl. It is a Mya bowl.

Mya bowls kind of suck. It's too deep to smoke the entire bowl.

Two quicklights? Too much. More tobacco, then.

I just used two coals that I attempted to break in half but ended up with multiple pieces. Worked much better. Never got harsh, but still lacking a bit in flavor, or has an off flavor. Perhaps I'm tasting the coal? I would agree that the Mya bowl kind of sucks, but I'm limited on funds so, I make do.

Use the poker on the tongs and chisel at the coals with it. That'll break them up. Its safer and easier to do it when they aren't lit, too.

these arent insta lights they are easy lights (exotica coals covered in silver paint)
