Amn_sinclair
i own a mossberg 12 gauge myself and its not that exact model but i love mine and i would highly recommend it and if u want it for home defense make sure u get a full choke for it. That way ur scatter pattern isnt to wide and it will help avoid collateral damage if god forbid u ever have to actually use it

omgitsjimmy
from what I've been reading, chokes don't really tighten the pattern at distances typical for home defense.http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot45_2.htm
Stuie
Don't forget the Non Lethal... cause you wanna F@#$ Up an intruder not your walls!http://www.deltaforce.com/catalog/lesslethalammo.htmland http://www.deltaforce.com/catalog/12gaugeammo.htmlAnd don't forget your Zombie Targets...http://zombietargets.net/

destructo
im not very good with distances but the longest straight line i can see in my house is my basement and it cant be over 30' straight. at that range chokes dont really matter
NIGHTS OF BAGHDAD
longest straight line in my house is 45 feet and then in my basement its about 50 feet

FiveSpeedF150
Pistol grip may look badass but your wrist will tire of you shooting very quickly when you practice.
TheScotsman
Choke is not on the list for home defense. You want cylinder bore to Improved, nothing tighter than that. A general rule for cyl-bore guns is that "turkey" buck will open up 1" for every yard of range. Or across the average 15' bedroom you have a nice dinner-plate sized pattern. #4T shot seems most effective choice, but it's still in weight range that easily penetrates drywall, if that is a worry in your local. My HD shotgun has a spreader - I guess if you are going to blow the crap out of your walls, may as well do it in a big way. mustang_steve
It depends....honestly, I'd rather go with a good semi-automatic pistol and some 9mm JHP ammo.Yes, it takes more accuracy, but there's also less spread, which means heaven forbid someone you care about is in proximity to the attacker, you may actually have a clean shot.I've been working on self-defense target practice with a 9mm subcompact (Sccy CPX-1, it's like the Kel-Tec P11), and so far I can consistently land shots within a softball sized spread at 25 feet. At 35 feet it's unacceptable, but I haven't shot a pistol since I was 17 (I'm 30 now), so it's safe to say that's my error. The only bad option is a rifle....no room for that kind of shenanigans. The shotgun will serve you well, just be sure to practice both slugs and shot.Non-lethal ammo will get you in serious trouble if the intruder is armed...in which case you'll probably die....never pull a gun to deter escalation (that's brandishing and in most states will get you in all kinds of trouble), pull a gun to stop a situation that can reasonably be seen as life threatening, and only if you fully intend to shoot. That said, less lethal rounds are not the answer. Police use them because they have body armor, riot shields and other kinds of ballistic protection....and numbers. The home defender lacks those. K1024
my home defense plan has always been:50 caliber sniper rifle with a thermal scope, and an alarm that alerts me when someone has broken in. basically i could shoot anyone in my house from anywhere in my house, without putting myself in a line of fire. yes it is radical, but if someone enters my house illegally and doesnt leave when an alarm comes on then i feel that my actions are warranted.plus ive always wanted a 50 cal...
