JDHarding
I know a lot of people have gotten sick from smoking hookah, and it's usually due to dehydration or smoking on an empty stomach. Here's the remedy.. before smoking, EAT SOMETHING. No, not sweets. Eat regular food. And while smoking, DRINK WATER. Also, stay away from alcohol while smoking. It'll only make things a whole lot worst. This has been a message from Dr. Harding. Edit: Oh, it doesn't have to be water, but it should be water based. Juice, coffee, tea.. but no soda/pop, and no alcohol. No milk either! Milk bad. Edited September 26, 2009 by JDHarding

Also, most people get sick from monoxide poisoning, which seems to be a big problem with QL coal users.

JDHarding
I've had coffee with hookah and had no problems with it. Though I'm a regular coffee drinker, so I might have built up an immunity to it. But whatever. Also, Gatorade is a good choice too.Another one to stay away from is any of those energy drinks. Don't drink those while smoking hookah. They'll mess you up in a bad way.

Chreees
I always eat real food before a smoke and drink tea while I'm smoking. I never get sick. I also never use QL's. Those make me sick. Naturals all the way!
JDHarding
Yes, if you're using QLs and getting sick from them.. it's the QLs.. they're nasty shit. Stay away from them. Especially John's QLs. They stink! There's a shitload of magnesium in them or something. Sorry, John, but it's the truth. Only get his naturals. Namenone
I've noticed i get headaches if i smoke hookah with QL's for a long period of time, whereas with naturals i dont seem to get it

Amn_sinclair
imo i dont think alcohol with hookah is that bad. I drink and smoke all the time and never have any problems. I smoke on an empty stomach no problems. I've only gotten sick from smoking once my whole life and that was because i smoked for like 4 hours by myself lol

twinturboa51
if quick lights are giving you headaches you might not be letting them light all the way. make sure there are no black spots at all of the coal and that its nice nd red. i have never had a bad session with ql, you just have to let them light up correctly. destructo
i never eat when i smoke and ive never gotten sick. i aslo drink heavily when i smoke and nothing bad has come out of it. also quicklights dont have magnesium in them. if they did youd be blinded when you light them. it looks more like blackpowder
indian_villager
You forgot to add "man up" to the list. Be in a well ventillated area. We need oxygen to live mmkay, and CO is bad mmkay.

They've went back to more reliable brands. I tried one coal they left for me, lit it, then split it....it wasn't red-hot all the way through. None of them knew what it was, they just knew they were getting headaches and numbness....when they told this to me, I informed them on that.I told them before about that, but people tend to forget such warnings until they experience it.So keep that as a note when trying out new QL brands....verify they are thoroughly lit...split the first few after they should be good to go, and see if they are really lit completely...if not, avoid that brand. mustang_steve
Another thing of note: sickness from hookah is usually from having the smoke too hot or too cool...both will make me sick....too hot and I cough, too cool and I want to hurl. This is why heat control is crucial....learn your bowls, no two are alike.....get one or two you really like and stick to them. Learn the shisha as well. Nak has a narrower margin between clouds and burning than Al Fakher does, but Nak requires more heat...so it's a littler harder to master. AF gets nastier when it burns though. These are the subtleties you'll figure out as you travel this path.Oh, and drink lots of something refreshing. I like my Diet Coke or diet Dew. Whorsquini
I'd say moderation is key as with most things. It is definitely a good idea to eat before you smoke or have a small snack while you smoke, but nothing too heavy during a smoke. I've never had a problem with having a couple of beers while using my hookah, but I guess everybody is different. The only time I ever get sick is when I fail to acclimate my Tangiers, which is pretty often for when I'm using Tangiers.
