Al Fakher In A Phunnel

Recommended Posts

so I recently got a phunnel (no not tangiers, its a Havana...I found it locally for much cheaper than anywhere online)

and I've tried to smoke my AF in a couple of times with varying styles packing and hole patterns but I still haven't gotten the clouds/flavor I was expecting from a phunnel setup

I searched the forum and found out to sprinkle the AF with no packing so I understand that but I still am not quite getting what i should

I think its in my hole pattern (I tried 3 concentric rings of holes around the middle, but the foil got sucked down, so I put a hole in the middle the next time)......what do ya'll recommend for a bowl of AF?

I'm still not sure if its the fire though

I mean I had about 4 coals (natural bulk Al-Abdo I think) and it still wasn't white out clouds like I can get with AF in an egyptian

I have no experience with a havana bowl, but what I do with my AF in a phunnel is this;
sprinkle the shisha into the bowl until its about 1/4th inch above the rim
put foil over the shisha and gently turn the bowl upsidedown with the foil touching the chicha
tamp it down on the counter cramming all the shisha in there (remember, its sprinked in)
turn it right side up and fold foil down over bowl
poke small holes with a neele, lots of them, stay more around the edges than the middle
smoke it and get ready for foggy night!

I have a havana phunnel and a tangiers phunnel, when I smoke AF out of either of them I generally poke larger holes around the outside of the bowl that go all the way through the shisha to the bottom of the bowl, then smaller holes just through the foil poked randomly everywhere else, and 1-2 larger holes right in the middle. Seems to give good flavor and smoke for me, but really you just need to experiment and try different packing and heat management methods until you figure out what works for you.

AF in a medium phunnel never worked as well as the egyptian bowl. I would love to get it to work well when my friends come over for a longer smoke session without the need to repack the bowls.

Its the coals you are using, try this, if it works I will explain why!

Put two logs side by side at the top, and another two side by side at the bottom. So if you are lookin at the bowl from above, at the top there should be two logs vertically side by side like || and at the bottom the same, If Im not making sense let me know!

i never pack them differently for different tobaccoes. The physics behind a phunnel doesn't change just because there is a different tobacco. I assure you the bowl doesn't know the difference. Pack it in full, I either use a few rings of holes around the tobacco and a bunch of holes in the center, or I just make the same hole pattern for a regular bowl with a few extra in the middle. The only difference in smoking AF vs. Tangiers will be the amount of heat needed. AF will always take more heat to smoke right than Tangiers.

why not just stick to an egyptian then?

I usually do, but I only have small egyptian heads, and i'd like to have longer sessions of Al Fakher (it being my favorite tobacco currently)
