Helix746
hey guys. im new to the forum, over the summer i always looked at this forum and had fun and learned alot about hookah, but i was never able to get the registration right, something about the email address it didnt like, but i finally talked to mush and got it to work. so just to tell a little about my setup, i have the old school rotator hookah from hookah shisha and it smokes like a dream, i have never smoked a hookah that even came close to it because it is supposed to have a wider stem and larger hose ports so the draw is really nice, but then again i have never smoked an mz or km, which i would really like to get a km and start a collection. i use a nammor hose that i took apart and put back together again with better materials so it wouldnt fall apart, and i use a tangiers small bowl. My favorite shisha brands are af, tang, and nak. So now that i have that out of the way onto the real problem. I just ordered my first box of coco naras last week (i have been using hookah johns instant light CH coals) and i am just now trying the cocos, i really like them except for one thing. I get them lit on a coil burner and they are red all the way around but after smoking for about 10-15 minutes they go out. They turn black again and have no heat. Is this because im not letting them sit on the stove long enough to heat the middle all the way through? or some other problem.
mattarios2
Try letting them sit an extra 1 min. If that doesn't work out ... what size holes are you using? Not enough air flow can cause cocos to go out. Mine never go out and I believe the reason for it is because I use large holes allowing for good air flow through the bowl.A friend of mine had the same issue and he tried using bigger holes and he said it fixed the issue. So give it a try maybe. And welcome!
Hookah S Moka
what i have found to work is only poke holes under where the coals are at, mostly so you draw air in through the coals and thus keeping them hot and not just pulling in air. the_cool
The side the coal is sitting on will go black, you just have to ask and flip it to the red side. The black side will become red in time (quickly if you put on a windcover)If the whole coal is going black, then yeh its worth letting them sit for a min or so on the stove. Try even letting them ash before you put them on the bowl
Helix746
ok cool i will try all ur suggestions. i am also cutting them in half before i put them on the stove do u think that could have anything to do with it?
mattarios2
no, I cut mine in half as well.I never touch my cocos, i drop them on the bowl and leave them there for the entire session. There is definitely something going on with the set up if you are forced to flip the cocos, you should not have to.
the_cool
mattarios2, can you post a pic of your hole pattern on your bowl? The side I smoke on ALWAYS goes black, I thought that was common knowledge? Edited October 3, 2009 by the_cool

Try even letting them ash before you put them on the bowlI agree. All my square natural coals do this, go black on the bottom and have to be flipped within the first five minutes. After that they seem to do just fine as long as I ash them every now and again and keep 'em moving around the bowl.

If you have a heavy knife and an iron skillet, they're a lot easier to split after they're hot--danger factor just goes up a bit.Instead of splitting them you could set them up on their edges on the bowl, laying them flat once you find you are ready for more heat.I've never had good luck with split coals (of that size). But I know a lot of people like 'em split.

They will last for sometimes over an hour.
