Maybe A Stupid Question...

Recommended Posts

I'm new to all this, but I just have to ask.

Whats with the red dye in shisha. I've noticed it in 5 out of the 6 packs that I've opened. The only one that didn't have it was cherry, which I actually expected to be red. Is it just something AF does, or what. It's really kinda got me puzzled.

It's because the actual coloring of the tobacco molassel would make people not want to smoke it. If it's candy apple red then more people would be attracted to it. I personally find that green colored shisha makes me neauseated.

I agree, and allow me to elaborate.

People generally hold connotative associations between darker colors and bad/dirty. I mean think about it (dirt, sewage, burns, etc etc) But bright colors, especially for Americans, give a subconscious association to presents and something new and exciting. On top of that the human eye is naturally attracted to Red. So you see red, you like it, period.

Great example: Next time you go to Chic Fil A and are looking at the fries see which ones you look at first or prefer to get. The large or the regular? Most of the time, it'll be the large because it's 90% red box with white lining and the regular box is the opposite. wink.gif

Never thought of the Chic-Fil-A thing, but that's probably because I'm too cheap to buy the large fries. The way you guys are putting it, it makes perfect sense though. I've never really had any problems from the dye, and so far, I like AF, so I'll at least get through what I have before switching to something else.

AF turns brown regardless once it has been smoked thoroughly. I wonder if that is another reason it's dyed red...as sort of a measuring stick for longevity.

Nak and Tangiers look like ground up roaches....but damn those roaches are delicious.

This can also be found in many other things. One thing for example is that after they process peas it takes the natural color away. Companies know that brown or gray peas would disgust anyone that would want to eat them, so green dye is added to return them to their natural color. Same thing with hamburger meat at fast food restaurants. Actually most of the time processed foods have been dyed to make them more pleasing to the consumer. I mean remember the green ketchup and blue butter that went around for a while? No one wanted to eat that because it looked too unnatural, so it was discontinued.

i've heard from quite a few different fellows that nak uses natural coloring. Personally I doubt that, but at least it isn't swimming in dye like many other brands.

I know of some people that get sick/headaches from dyes on and off the forum.

Stuie for example can't handle certain dyes, but I do believe he smokes nakhla routinely with tangiers and romman. So I do think there may be something different between the colorings nakhla uses vs other brands. But I do not know for sure, just from my own experience.

Huh..

Desi Murli looks like cowshit, but I still smoke it. Seriously, if heaped up into a pile, it'd look like fresh poo.
