The hotplate or glass stoves dont work too well and you may or may not crack the glass stoves if you light the coals on there. Who knows?All I know is I've smoked all three and the only differences I noticed was that Cocos and CHs are all 100% uniform in size while AF's vary slightly coal to coal, and Coco's produce finer ash. (Believe it or not, I think CHs produce the most course ash with AFs somewhere in the middle.) While coal uniformity and ash consistency may be deciding factors to some people (maybe?), I could care less. I just want a coal that burns hot, lasts a while, has no taste, and is easy on the wallet. Therefore, both AF Nats and CH's make me smile. By the way, we use AF Nats at our lounge and have no problems whatsoever. Some of the best coals I've found, and they won't break the bank. Although, they are sized slightly differently - not enough to effect the burn time by that much, though. Maybe you got a bad batch?I'd like to buy a small quantity of Coco's and CH's to officially test them. I'll see if I can get it done in the next couple of weeks and report back. I'm all curious now. Hookah S Moka Posted October 5, 2009 Share Posted October 5, 2009 I tryed my first box of AF Coconut coals, they were ok to be exact.... not as good as coconaras, mostly because the inconsistant size, there were alot that were HUGE then some half the size, like wtf?!?! but to start, it had a funny taste to them, as they started to ash it went away and i got a smoother smoke, great amount of heat but thats about it. Reasoning is because with CH coals you are forced to ash them b/c the thick ash sticks to the coals. with cocos it is thin and very little ash, so you drop the coals on the bowl, and thats it, never have to touch or ash them again. The ash falls right off on its own whereas the CH, have to be ashed somewhat often or you lose a lot of heat. (I hate ashing coals, it's just easier not to have to)Also cocos burn longer.I find it humerous that many always wanna say oh, you buy it because it costs more. Arcane Posted October 22, 2009 Share Posted October 22, 2009 (edited) i absolutely love my AF coconut coals...so much so that i bought the 720ct box and may buy another one just to have on hand...here's my review: http://www.hookahforum.com/index.php?s=&am...st&p=416997however, i wanted to make some amendments to my review, but haven't gotten around to it yet.1. the length of these coals seem to be really good as long as you don't take 10 pulls in 30 seconds, like i normally do. i've had them last longer than one episode of Sons of Anarchy (~1hr)2. i can't really detect a taste from the coals, but i'm still not positive. maybe there's a "smokey" taste, but then again i do smoke cigs and tend to heat my bowl on the hotter side (not enough to burn it, but right at the limit)3. the "chips" and sparks aren't coming off the coals that HJ sent me. the ones that Mahir sent still spark up a bit and chip on the inhales...i think this has to do more with how they were handled during shipping though...either way, for the money you spend...i think the AF coals are a steal and pretty damn good. they have somewhat replaced my beloved canarys. i may still break out the canarys for long-haul smoke sessions...but, the 1-2 hours sessions call for the AF cocos.however, i do think coconaras are a better coal - but you do pay a higher price. but the benefits of the coconaras don't justify the higher price...
