A really good friend of mine who's a cop told me the best protection is of all things, a good squirt gun filled with household ammonia. You have to find a good one that doesn't leak, but you don't require a permit to have it and it works really well. A squirt in the chest - the easiest and biggest target and he's going to unable to see for his eyes tearing and choking from the fumes. Which gives you time to get away and get help.
