Hookah Downstem Diameter Vs Smoke And Flavor

Recommended Posts

Long story short, I got into smoking about 3 years ago. My first pipe was a 29 inch, detachable chinese hookah. Named it frost. Aka

my sn. The downstem of the hookah was about 1.25 cm in diameter. This by far was the best hookah i have ever owned, in terms of

flavor and thickness of smoke.

I also owned a KM Trimetal and a KM Precision 3 chamber. Both hookahs smoked great, but never as thick or as flavorful as my 1st

hookah. My hypothesis is that KM hookahs diameters of their downstems are so wide, they allow too much air in and the ratio of smoke

to normal air is less than the ratio of smoke to air of a downstem that is less wide.

With both hookahs, i kept a control of everything. Same shish(al fakher) and same tangiers phunnel bowl and same nammor hose.

I would like to know other peoples opinions on this hypothesis!

In my experience, this has much more to do with bowl used, moassel, packing method, and foil pattern than it does the ID of the stem tube.

physics would say that it would be an easier draw with a bigger diameter. maybe you drew too hard and suck faster than smoke could be made?

if it is a easier draw, that would mean more air from the atmosphere is being filtered through the bowl, thus less flavorful and thick smoke. Like an ink sponge. If you have a little water filtering through a ink sponge, the ink water mixture will be more concentrate. If you have alot of water going through the ink sponge, the ink water mixture will be more dilute

He may be on to something, I have a nile(18in?) Pharaoh which is 30in and a syrian which is about 20~25in. Out of all three I have always seemed to get the best smoke out of the nile, btw all of these are one hose. I have even switch hookahs in the middle of a session(found rust in my hose which is a nammor, when I was smoking my pharaoh, which is the reason why that one has been retired)

just take a look at the smoke stored in your vase. if it remains thick and dense in the vase, when you pull at a good rate, you're pretty much inhaling only the smoke. in other words, air doesn't have a chance to build in the base. if you're pulling too fast/hard...your bowl may not be producing enough smoke to keep up, thus pulling in smoke as well as air.

minus the bubbling, the base doesn't really look any different when i'm taking a pull...i think the smoke i inhale gets replaced quickly by new smoke from the bowl.

i think, a hookah with a stricter pull...there's less of a chance to pull to fast/hard. so, you "get more smoke".

honestly, if you have your packing and heat mgmt down...your bowl should be able to keep up with the pulls...

at least, that's what i think... Edited by Arcane

Totally agree with you Arcane, I have noticed this with my KM, sometimes there is alot of smoke but the smoke in the vase looks very thin, and the clouds are not really dense. If i pull slowly, the smoke builds up. Iv found denser clouds with non KM pipes. If I managed to get the heat spot on, the smoke will look thick in the vase no matter what. But i find it hit and miss sometimes.

I really do think though, given my packing methods and such, that a tighter draw may actually be beneficial in some cases. I guess it can vary from person to person. May have to try a thinner hose!
