Parents

So, the first time I ordered shisha online (about a month ago) my parents found out that I smoke hookah. (They still have access to my bank records, and I can't change that right now, because I'm below the minimum balance to have a standalone account.) I wasn't sure how they were going to react to it, and to my surprise, it went over without much of a problem. They've even brought it up a couple of times in conversation (although it was sarcastic).
Anyway, I was thinking I should bring them to one of the local lounges near me, the next time I'm home from college. I'd probably turn them really off to it if we just smoked at home, because I still haven't got my packing or heat management down yet, and I still either have the smoke be way too harsh, or way to thin, or pretty tasteless. I'm assuming that those skills will come in time for me. (I'm sick of having not so great sessions.)
But I was wondering what kind of success you guys have had with introducing the actual smoking of hookah with your parents, especially if you're around college age.

I was in the same situation, besides the whole banking tracking thing. One day I brought it up to my parents that I smoked, and immediately stressed the fact that it was not cigarettes, or nht, but in fact it was shisha (I was really surprised that my mother knew what it was beforehand, she gave me a lecture on how she'd make it for my grandmother back at the homeland.) They were Reallly against it, and they made sure I knew that they didn't like the idea. My dad even pushed for me to just smoke cigarettes!
A few weeks process, and my public smoking sessions on the patio they realized that I'm older, and sides... 4/5 of my family smokes (well, 3/5 while one of my parents secretly smokes left-overs that's left in the tray every once in awhile.) About a year later, I can casually break out the hookah and set up, and when I smile, they smile back (or sometimes I'll just set up, and my parents will just ask if I'm going to smoke.)

My advise to you, just be truthful. Parents appreciate it when things aren't hidden from them.
If they disagree, I guess they've just got to accept it, for it is your life and the best they can do is guide you? (unless they threaten you...I can't help you there!)

No worries on the truthful aspect of it all. Ever since they saw the bank statement, I've been 100% up front with them about it. Both my parents used to smoke, and my dad still smokes cigars (probably more often than I smoke hookah, but that's not that often.) My mom made a half assed attempt to get me to stop, but only because she feels like she needs to look out for me. I just kinda thought it would be cool to have something that I could do with them, seeing as we don't really have a whole ton of things in common.

Ahh I see, maybe the first hand experience at a lounge thing could be a good thing.
And think of it this way, if they like it... it'll be a new family thing!

One of the first times I set up a hookah at my house my mom wanted to smoke with us. And now she is obsessed with it. She keeps begging me "Buy more mint chocolate chiiiiiiipppppp that's my FAVORITE". I think I might order her a ton of Starbuzz Chocolate Mint just because she likes it so much lol

I think.. compared to cigarettes, hookah is a much fancier, prettier way to smoke. The pipes are often very nice looking, and the smell doesn't make you want to throw up. Just walking by someone smoking a cigarette is a horrible stench. Imagine a cigarette lounge.. nasty. They probably don't care as long as it's not NHT stuff.

Yeah. I think that's their reasoning for the most part. And my girlfriend smokes cigs every once in a while...I hate the smell, and everything about it really, but there's not much i can do about it. She doesn't do it habitually, at least...

my parents were turned off at first but once we had a discussion they were more friendly about it, they dont like it but realize that it is my choice and leave me alone about it. my mother who used to be a heavy smoker will sometimes sit with me and join just be upfront and honest about it

My mother would kill me if she found out. I'm 29, still living with her, and currently don't have enough cash to pay for my own place. I pay half the rent here, and pay for food, but don't have the means to get my own place. Unless I can find an apartment for $500 with electricity, water, and internet for free. tongue.gif

I'm a sophmore in college and my parents didn't freak out as much as I thought they would. I told them that I recently discovered hookah and let them know I was going to get one. We had a discussion of the science behind the hookah and everything like that. after I told them everything I knew they didn't mind. My mom even joined me a couple times but my stepdad just hates smoking period.
