Tangiers Tangiers Tangiers

Recommended Posts

So as all of you may know, i bought 750 g of tangiers and plan on smoking it all by the end of this week. My wife will only let me this week nd my friend is down from boston.

So 1st session- tropical punch- tobacco smell

2nd session- orange soda- decent flavor, felt like the smoke was ripping the lining of my asophagus

3rd session- schnozberry- good flavor, again ripping the lining of my asophagus, not so bad as the last one

4th session- tropical punch- Great flavor - Packed it like eric, after watching his video. Poked holes with an oyster, and used johns coals. -

Lets just say that after this session, wen i inhale too deeply, my lungs feel like they are ripping apart. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?!

My setup :

Trimetal mashal with ice bucket

Tangiers small phunnel

3 of johns ch hookah coals

took one off after my asophagus was burning and still burnt

packed pretty deep. did the foil test and everything

used cold water for the most part

maybe johns qlights burn to hot for tangiers?

Put em on their sides. Use room temperature water. Use 2 of them. WAIT for the tobacco to come up to temperature for a while. Then set them down on their flat sides after you ash them the first time. I couldnt smoke with John's coals even with 2 without setting them on their sides.

acclimating in a soup quart container, stirring up every now and then. Smells good at least, didnt think that would be a problem. I think it might be too much heat. But one observation i made is, even when the HJ coals were about each 1 1/2 cm in diameter, they still hurt my throat. so i dont know if it definately woud be heat control.

again, anyone use starlights?

Dude, do your coals like in mattarios2's Nakhla tutorial:

http://www.hookahforum.com/?showtopic=31762

In fact, I use this same method for Tangiers, and I get a perfect smoke everytime. For me, the tutorial can be used for either Nakhla or Tangiers. Just remember that for wet tobaccy you pack it lighter than dry tobaccy. I always use the two coals split in four halves method. Never fails me.

Hope this helps.

i use starlights. should be the same as john's coals as far as management is concerned.

I pack tight, slightly below the rim of the bowl, foil, poke like 3 rings of holes and a few over the center hole, and use 3 coals on a small phunnel. I start them hanging 1/2 way off the outer edge of the bowl and move them in as a i smoke. if its too harsh, i put 2 next to eachother over the center hole and stack the 3rd on top till they die down a little, at which point i replace them on the edge of the bowl - though not hanging off.

works for me.

Sounds like everyone here is giving you some great advice.

- I agree 3 coals (esp. coconuts are WAY too many on a small) They carry more heat than something like exoticas or japanese coals. Even with exoticas normally I set them on their end rather than the long side. Just let it heat up slowly and it pays off in the end if you try to get it smoking too quickly you'll kill the flavor and your lungs.

-ROOM TEMP water. Cold water KILLS tangiers. I used to wonder why my sessions were better during the warmer months with tangiers. I've come to the conclusion that it was smoking outside and the water being cooled off just like I had put ice in it. Killed the flavor.
=Ice bucket is probably ok but not cold water in the base.

- using heavy duty foil might help as well if you're not already

my bowls never have that "omg, i'm dying" feeling when i inhale...and i slam a lot of heat on them...

the flavor is strong and there's a very slight smokey tinge to it (personal preference)...but, when it goes overboard...it doesn't kill my lungs, it just tastes burnt.

so, i'm guessing maybe you're underpacking...

If its getting really harsh after 20 minutes or so, its too much heat. It might be underpacked, too but it sounds like too much charcoal. If, when removing more heat, you find the smoke to be thin and harsh still, its underpacked. Try different stuff on your own, lots of these people have different things that work for them, because they do things in a way that might be different than the way you do them. (Small holes in the foil vs. large, for example)

Use two coals....three is too many. And a windcover might help as well. And how are you doing on acclimation. That is a big factor as well.

We have a winner.. 2 CH coals is plenty for a small phunel!!

There was a thread discussing this not too long ago. Some were arguing 2 CH coals, split and distributed across the bowl, others were arguing 3.

I tried 3 and it smoked very well.
