Tangiers is def worth a vacation if you ever get the chance. First time I went I seen the whole production in action it was pretty cool. Not only that I don't recall what we smoked when I got there but it was freshly made from scratch and was so so good. I also remember Scoop giving Eric some kinda hug for making him a fresh batch of whatever he ordered to take home. I think Eric had fear in his eyes LMAO. Edited by xpimpitox

Also, do more research than what's available in this topic. Tangiers isn't a "scoop the tobacco into a bowl and expect it to work" type shisha like starbuzz. You're most likely going to want to watch eric and johns packing video available here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACfPMVGV2V0

Also look into phunnel bowls to make your experience 100% better and longer.

It is for lots of people. Lots of people have no problems with packing or smoking it immediately. Other people like to cling on to mistaken ideas they have had for a long time, which makes any tobacco, including Tangiers not smoke as well. Since Tangiers runs "hotter" the decrease in performance is more noticeable, Tangiers gets blamed for it.

I heard about this place called Tangiers. Its a dump. The owner is a hostile jackass, the tobacco is just repackaged Hookah Hookah mixes. I hate that place, I give it -1 stars! One day, I'm going to donkeypunch that jerk in the back of the head so he knows how his tobacco makes me feel.

I've just been reading this book "How to be sarcastic on the interwebs" Its the best book I ever read. I've been practicing. How's this:"Tangiers is made in San Diego at the Tangiers lounge. The address is 5795 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, CA."

Please wait until next weekend before doing anything. I want to be there when you try and donkey punch yourself in the back of the head. laugh.gif

Oh and in case you suffer from amnesia as a result and forget the secret ingredient to Tangiers, I will post it here just this once in case you ever need to find it:

Minute Maid Orange Juice

Trust me, I've seen it with my own eyes!

Somehow I knew you'd say that when I was writing the post.

Naturally your assertion is true, but for some people it takes trial and error or simply a re-aligning of their habits before it will smoke well (I know you know this). If someone had told me to smoke tangiers before I knew wtf I was doing it would have been a disaster, and for a little while it was. You declare on the packages themselves that you have to relearn certain aspects of smoking hookah in order to get it smoking right. Is this no longer your opinion?

The interesting thing about being the owner of a company in a place that directly helps with/criticizes their product is that you have to sit and listen to people saying things that are just not true about your product. The times where things become problematic are when people are trying to help/recommend your product but do so in a way that doesn't fully explain the nature of the situation making you feel like your product was not done the justice that it deserved. This is fair and was the case with my post here. Could I have spelled everything out explicitly here? Yes, but it didn't seem necessary as we have someone who is new to tangiers and needs nothing more than a quick explanation of what it means to smoke tangiers for the first time. By no means was I trying to indicate that tangiers is some wild oft-untamable beast that you should only try if you're willing to take a large risk.

Futhermore I am of the club of people who never have acclimation issues, and have always been able to smoke without many worries. However, it wasn't until recently when my skill at packing finally clicked that I was having the huge cloud flavor fest that tangiers is known for. This wasn't the case with other tobaccos. What I'm trying to get at is that I strongly agree with the idea that tangiers CAN require a decent amount of effort on the part of the user before you reach the apex and that this aspect shouldn't be ignored when introducing new people to the stuff despite the often unfair reputation it gets around here and other places.

Hey, man, I love ya, I was just saying.

Essentially, what I'm saying is similar to that. Until I went to hookah.com several years ago, I had no idea that people actually put a sprinkle of tobacco in the bottom. The way I learned how to do it is the way I've always done it. I cut my teeth on Nahkla and Al Waha before I went into the biz. Its clear that the way I do things is not universal, but its important that people realize there is no "One way to do things". Quite a few people believe that there are certain immutable rules that are not universal at all or are seldom true (Water 1" over the bottom of the downstem, for example). Still, there's no shortage of people of claim that they have a corner on truth. Nobody does here. Hookie, you are not one of those people that claim to know best. You're a good guy, and I respect you. The people that claim that there's only one way to do things seemingly can't get anything to smoke satisfactorily except one or two brands. I wonder why that is?

When I first joined this Forum, I set out to correct the superstitions of the hobby. They still persist, man, I'm not directing this at you, I'm directing this at these self-styled oracles who claim expertise but really sound out as dilettantes. You are a guy who looks at a problem critically and examines what can be changed to improve the situation. Thats what the key is, in the final examination. Ultimately, at the risk of sounding vain or smug, I'm reminded of a pair of hybrid mono-block amplifiers I had when I was younger. They were awesome. They were claimed to be stable in an open circuit. Very few amplifiers are, because they aren't made well. It is the pinnacle of quality in an amplifier to be stable in an open circuit (not something you want to test, though). I tried to make Tangiers in a particular way and I believe it to be the best tobacco on the market. People learn alternate ways to make faulty or poorly made tobacco smoke well, they take those bad habits with them to smoke Tangiers and it fails for them. Not my fault, don't blame Tangiers. I feel it is the best constructed tobacco on the market. It has the same shortcomings of any brand of tobacco. I try to provide support to help people run it to its full potential, like acclimation for instance, and then people say Tangiers sucks because of acclimation issues. ALL tobaccos have acclimation issues. Whether hookah tobacco, pipe tobacco, cigars or cigarettes. Its the nature of the beast. I try to let a little light in and then people claim its because of this light that Tangiers is problematic. All hookah tobacco is the same, ultimately. Each brand (and even flavors) need a slightly different touch. A slightly different touch is required when the humidity is damp vs. when its dry. So, I would contend (back at you Hookie), that packing Tangiers is no different than anything else, a person has to develop how they pack the tobacco based on what they have in front of them, not what people's preconceived notions might be. That being said, to answer your question, I still contend that people have to relearn certain aspects of hookah when approaching Tangiers...if a person "knows" something to be true in regards to smoking hookah, they may have to learn an alternate idea..."relearn". If you see my point. I think you know all that though. smile.gif

I have found empirically speaking, in life as well as smoking Tangiers, that people who are instilled with an notion of adversity or failure have more problems because of anxiety and trying to hard. Learn the basics, how a hookah and the brand of tobacco works from a wizened smoker and everything will fall into place.

Clearly, these are opinions on my part, somebody else might claim that I pack bowls wrong and thats fine. I pack a bowl of any given brand (or line of a brand) differently from Tangiers. Each brand has a different thing you need to do to it, based on the cut of the tobacco, how wet the juice is, how much juice there is, etc. Packing Nakhla, Romman or Al Waha the same as Tangiers isn't that great. Mizo doubly so. Fantasia and Starbuzz require a different approach altogether. Even within Tangiers, packing mint the same as Horchata is silly.

I say all this with a smile on my face, I hope everyone will see this in the friendly tone it is intended. Tell the next hookah expert you meet to go back and learn something. Thats my advice. smile.gif
