Tangiers Packing

I believe the "brain-trust" leans more towards 1 1/2-2 CH coals with lots of large holes. Your imperative that fewer holes make for more airflow is false. There is little to no lateral airflow...the airflow should be mainly vertical. Just believe me and reduce the amount of coals when you use more holes. The "heat-up" period is something you would observe in an underpacked bowl mostly, I believe. The conduction force in an underpacked bowl leans more heavily on the ceramic, the way I pack a bowl, the tobacco has a larger part in the heat transfer. I put coals on and it starts smoking immediately, with better results in three to five minutes or so.

When I pack Noir Tangiers, I do it per the video Eric did with John - foil test and all. I poke holes throughout the entire surface of the foil using a toothpick or skewer and throw two, whole AF Nats on there. First pull, I get little to no smoke. Subsequent pulls - little to no smoke. Two coals never seems like enough. It's not until I throw another on there that I seem to have enough heat to get the bowl going.

So, contrary to what's usually said about Tangiers requiring less heat, it's my experience that it uses just as much as almost everything else I smoke.

I think I am going to try using smaller holes. Naturals ash differently than japanese coals, and I notice bigger holes seem to clog completely to the point that I have to re-poke the holes several times during the session. Smaller holes should help alleviate this issue. I also think I'm going to stop poking all the way to the bottom of the phunnel. I can use all the conduction I can get.

Conduction dude, conduction.  Honestly, in my experience tangiers is lower heat.  I know Mush says he is always shocked to see how much coal people use with tangiers on their photos.

Although I've never smoked using a metal screen, I kind of wonder how they would perform on Tangiers. Granted, you could only possibly use it on a small phunnel, but the holes seem big enough at least.
