So, The Bad News...

Recommended Posts

We've had to part ways with gaia.plateau. I love the guy, too, I went to bat for him in the past and would have liked to again. Unfortunately, we've reached an impasse in terms of the rules. I find the whole situation sad, but necessary. I stuck my neck out to get the guy reinstated in the first place and part of the agreement was that if the time came and the mods/admins felt it wasn't working out, I had to do the chopping. So, the task falls down to me. It was necessary, it was regrettable, we will be lesser because of his absence.

If he were here, I think he'd offer a sincere thanks to a lot of you. He will be smoking hookah, thinking of some of you. He will miss being here, and we will all miss him.

To gaia. if you can read this;

Go easy, man. Thanks, for everything.

Your friend,
Eric

NOOOOOOOOO!

Srsly, Gaia is definitely one of the smartest people I've talked to.  I'm sad to see him go...again.

Take it easy man.

I agree with that.

Strange how such an active member could be banned... especially twice.

EDIT: But, then again, I don't know all the details...

He was banned, but reinstated, thats a fact. As I said, I assured the other moderators/admins it could work out, that I'd take responsibility, and that got him reinstated the first time. My logic at the time was somebody who's contributed so much deserves a second chance. The mods/admins aren't beyond reconsidering something, you know. It takes a moderator or admin to advocate for a banned member and the other mods/admins can't have strong objections. Some people have been perma-banned and then it was found that one or more mods/admins was strictly opposed to reinstatement, so it died. We operate by democratic process largely. You guys can't see that, but most people who have been a guest mod can attest that we discuss things before acting in any specific capacity. No mod/admin acts in a unilateral fashion. So any large ban or reinstatement is democratically discussed, each mod/admin having an equal say. Sometimes mods/admins will accept "projects". To be responsible for, this Forum, that Member, the problem over there, etc. Smaller police-type mod actions are often done unilaterally, but only temporary ones. Spammers are often unilaterally banned, when its obvious that they are a spammer.

I've been banned three times, including one perma-ban.

And, for the record, we don't want to read PMs from people complaining that such and such or so and so was banned. We consider those things individually, its not open to discussion. There's at least one person I would like to see reinstated that won't be. There's at least four people whom I know and like that I don't want reinstated. We don't ban people becuase we enjoy it, we ban people because we deem it in the best interests of the Forum. We're not perfect, but we do alright.

sad.gif I have been guest mod before, so I understand the difficulties involved in a situation like this. We had one member who was very active that got a perma when I was modding, it was sad, but I personally was ok with seeing that certain someone go. Again, it was sad, but I and most of the other mods felt it was in the best interest of the forum. Tho, I can't say I agree with gaia_plateau. But, as much as I disagree with his ban, I will not argue with it because I know there must be something that I don't know about the whole situation.

Hope its not out of line, but any chance we could vote on it as a community? If not, I totally understand, I know its more of a moderator/admin decision and so forth, but I can't see the harm in suggesting it. I personally really enjoyed gaia and just look past his the annoying theory stuff. Very interesting person to talk to, he will be missed, by me.

No, its not open to a vote. He has in the past been disruptive, insulting, and down right unpleasant to other members. When he was suspended for soemthign he didn't like being busted for a while back he made a second account, a perma-banning offence, when all he had to do was wait out his vacation time. That was the first prema ban. After the above with eric taking responsibility, we let him back, only to watch his "i can post what i want, when i want" attitude came into play again. When you get a second chance most people don't, do not go back to doing what you did the first time. Just friendly advice.

Oh, and don't get personally insulting with the people who are controling your access in pm's. I've been accused of far worse by far better than you Gaia.

In case some of you are thinking this is a personal thing. I'll tell you all what I told him, I don't CARE if you all post here or not. I try to keep this forum running smoothly and enforce a SHORT list of reasonable rules to keep me and the mods from having to work too hard on this place, seeing as we dont get ANY sort of compensation for our time. With a few very notable exceptions, my personal feeling don't enter into how this forum is run. Otherwise certain people would have been perma-banned a long time ago, or atleast long before they actually were.

So, with a final note that Eric was the final word on this one, and he realized it just wasn't going to work in the long run, I can't say that as the Admin, im sorry to see him go. As a user, i'd have to say he was entertaining to have around. Remember, be nice......or be silent.

i agree..if the admin and mods do something..its for the interest of the forum which means its in the interest of us..we shouldnt question them in anyway on who they ban because we dont get to see all the stuff that goes on behind locked doors..i will admit i have screwed up a bit has well and mush has always been strict but very fair with me..has he is with everyone.. i didnt get to talk alot with gaia much..actually most of our convos were in the chat room and he was a decent guy..but you gotta play by the rules..no matter how smart or kool you are and how many members like you..im sorry to see him go..but its something we have to live by..

1) get a new ip address and email address
2) make a new username and pretend nothing happened
3)????
4) profit?

Ive been a mod on a board or 2 in my life and i dont know about you but its pretty easy to bypass unless you subnet ban which could effect a lot of other people

#3 bust out the hookah...... ??? is that a possiblity or will it involve something to do with work, lol i love that south park episode btw.

if step 3 was bust out the hookah, it would ruin the whole plan step 3 always had to be ????

Actually, it is out of line. It is indeed a moderator/admin decision. There is no harm in suggesting it. This decision kills me as much as anybody, trust me. It was a tough call I had to make.

Can't say that I care either way but I'm glad to see that nothing makes anyone immune to the rules around here.
