frost91
So after purchasing 750gs of Tangiers, i have been going to a friends house every so often to try to get it right. I have mentioned how i have set everything up as eric does in his video. Used an oyster fork to pack, did the foil test, and poked the holes. Split 2 starlight coals in half, used a small phunnel.I am smoking out of a trimetal mashal ice bucket and using a nammor hose. The flavor i taste is ok, but not what im use to. I'm use to the flavor of brands like al fakher and nakhla and starbuzz. All great flavors. but everytime i smoke tangiers, it feels as the back of my throat is being sprayed with acid. Its not a harsh feeling, but more of a inhaling cigarette feeling. Also, the flavor tastes like its vaporized splenda! I absolutely hate the taste of splenda. I have no idea what i am doing wrong. Some good advice is really appreciated. And also, i am using warm water in the vase.
NIGHTS OF BAGHDAD
my guess is your not packing it tight enough and its burning
nd4snd
Have you tried using a different kind of coal? I've used Starlights in the past, and I'm not a big fan of them..
frost91
eh, starlights have been hit or miss for me, but imo, you cant beat 5 dollars for 80 coals. I tried using HJ qLs but same result, its a pain. And honestly, i am packing as much as i can. Lets put it this way, wen i packed with an oyster fork today, i packed it so tight that the juices started coming out of the shish : X
NIGHTS OF BAGHDAD
anyway you can take a pic for us of the bowl with the foil?
frost91
of course! but probably not until a week from now. Having a baby is a pain. No more daily smoking. Gotta go to my best friends house to have a nice relaxing session. Which in fact, hasnt happened in 3 weeks due to my difficulties with tangiers. I've been so determined to get it to smoke right, but it just isnt working out

Starlights are probably too hot. For newbies, Tangiers should only tickle the back of your throat when inhaling. No harsh, no serious coughing or anything, just a tickle. I'm guessing, even with them split in half, it's still too much coal heat. Also, make sure your water level is at a good spot. A diffuser will help get a lot of water in the base and make the smoke smoother.

Besides the buzz.

ryno
I noticed you were using an ice chamber hookah? If so, I wouldnt put ice in it and use room temp or slightly warm water. For me, the colder the smoke, the rougher Tangiers can be.
Arcane
i've never experienced this cold + harsh smoke phenomenon....what could cause that?
Sonthert
Depends on the weather you live in normally, Jay.I would recommend trying three halves on a small. If the smoke is thin and harsh still, you probably are underpacked on tobacco.
frost91
3 halves, decent smoke, not thick clouds, 4 coals. thunder clouds. with even 1 coal. ripping of the lungs :X i mean, i dont think i can pack the tobacco any more, i made sure i used an oyster for and when i packed it, the juices were oozing out. I live in long island new york. towards the western part if that helps. The first time i smoke tangiers, it wasnt really harsh to the throat but, tasted like tobacco too.I really can't see what im doing wrong.BTW i dont put ice in the ice chamber, just think its a really nice design.ps. thanks sonhert for commenting. know ur a busy guy and all. and thanks to all of you for trying to help my problem as well

I am on a mission to get it to smoke right!!!! either die, or smoke!and im pretty sure its not the coal, i used johns qls and still same result. everytime i get good smoke, just not smooth. and also, i get a tingley feeling on my tong, not the back of my throat. have no idea whats wrong Edited October 28, 2009 by frost91
foibled again
When the problems you describe are commonly associated with underpacking, and people including the maker himself say you are probably underpacking, you are probably underpacking. hookah hippie
more tobacco will help try adding coals slowing to the bowl to insure that you don't buyrn it
Arcane
well...the weather is a bit weird here...most days, its hot and somewhat comfortable...not really humid...other days, you can feel yourself walking through the humidity...and sometimes it changes during the day...my OG is kinda getting upset at the weather as well.... dafunk5446
Just keep tinkering man, you will get it down. I know that sucks to hear, but you have to develop your own method as to loading tangiers, dont worry so much about how one person does it, cause honestly there are a lot of methods and I doubt everybody does it the same way. Ralleac
I have had this same problem pretty regularly for over a year now. Have you tried leaving the tobacco out for an hour or two immediately before smoking? I've had some amount of luck doing that.
mix_tape
I sometimes get a tickle in my throat when smoking Tangiers, I tried packing it tighter and that seems to be the trick for me.PS congrats on the baby!
Twisted
I've come to realize that I pack a lot of tangiers in a small. Make sure the density of tobacco is just like it is in the bag before you open it.
frost91
well i guess i have to superload my small phunnel. nextime, there will be tons of pics so u can all see what i am doing and how i can fix it! but imo. i pack a superload already. its hard to pack anymore. i did the foil test as well. and maybe it is the weather. PS: i leave my shish in the trunk of my car. if my wife knew i was sneaking out once a week to smoke, she would kill me. Shes been pretty grumpy as of late :X
