It's more the first two than the third. But a shitty setup will make a session worse as it makes heat management more difficult and pulling just as bad. Plus you want your hookah to last you a few years at least. I'm still using my favorite hookah of 3 years and it's not going anywhere anytime soon .

id say heat management....

packing is overrated in my opinion, i used to spend ample amounts of time packing, now i just throw it in and go to town and im having much better luck that way

as far as the hookah, as long as it doesn't leak and isn't TOO constrictive, its not a big deal. I can pretty well get my AF, KM, and QT all to smoke about the same. And most of your constrictive problems will be in your hose. My roommate has a not so great chinese hookah, and after hooking up my hose to his, it smoked much better.

heat management is more vital. not enough heat and you get no clouds, too much heat, and you run the chance of burning the shisha, ruining the session, having harsh smoke, and an all around crappy time.

its a number of things to be honest..sometimes it has nothing to do with the hookah..it starts with your necessities obviously the hookah,the packing method, heat management, type of coals your using,brand of shisha, then if can expand from there..weather your smoking alone, or with friends, how your day went, did your girl or parents get on your ass about something, did your boss piss you off, all these things will have a hand on the out come of your session..from my experience anyways..lol

i think its a combo of all three working together. packing n heat management are imprtant cause if you just throw some tobacco in a bowl n set some coals on top it probably wont smoke as good as if you were to spend a little time packing n paying attention to heat management. also i think just a good quality not leakly hookah will do find for anyone

imo, order of importance

1. heat management
2. packing
3. hookah

without proper heat management, even a well packed bowl can result in FAIL....however, a poorly packed bowl can still smoke decently if you can get the heat right. now, a horribly packed bowl may not be able to be saved no matter what...soooo, you can't just neglect packing, like grabbing a handful and smashing it into a bowl...or taking 10 leaves and dropping them in the middle of a bowl.

and the hookah moreso just adds to the experience...the KM rumble, the Mya styling, the Syrian disappointment....either way, the hookah just adds a little something to your experience....
