taxx
Has anyone ever used coals from a fire? I was burning branches and some wood outside and took some coals to try out for my hookah, doesn't work so well, anyone ever try this?
antouwan
yeah. it isn't really all that great. i mean it depends heavily on what kind of wood your burning compared to how long the coals will last me thinks. we used to do this but now we just toss some orange/lemon wood coals or cocos in the fire to light them up in no time! jordanneff
I remember a thread like this a while back. Basically it's fine to use them depending on the wood burned. From what I recall you especially don't want to use something like pine, spruce, cedar or other conifer (aka trees that make cones). But your typical woods used for say barbecuing are fine. ryno
I've done it before, and you have to use alot of small pieces. The larger ones will go out really fast.

Zyram
I have done this. Was when I just got back home from out of state, my grandfather had been burning brush piles and trees he had pushed over on the farm. In any case, even the larger ones stayed lit the whole time, it was mostly oak/cedar/mesquite that was in the pile, and I'm not sure what all I got from the coals. No taste, and worked perfectly, never went out (but you've gotta remember they were smoldering there for a LONG time, he'd burned in the morning and I grabbed these in the evening). So, make sure they are large to begin with, and make sure you've got a well lit fire burning to keep more coals cycling through and you'll be fine. I think it'd take a lot more to get the same effect though, IE you have to burn a lot more wood to keep the coals you use going since it's not easy to light one in the first place all the way through.-Z
hookah hippie
ie think mesquite works make sure it is natural wood and doesn't have any chemicals to help it light
Elektrobot
Oak makes awesome coals, they stay lit forever. Just make sure the wood is fully combusted-
inino
They go out and taste nasty. probably harmful.
