Recommended Posts

I know everybody has their own way of getting rid of sickness.
I happen to be sick right now and I would love any ideas on what I can do to get over it. Hopefully by the weekend!

I have a sore throat, a cough, and a stuffy noseeeee.
Thanks!

also vitamins/supplements

I take Vitamin C, Echanasia(eck-a-nasia), and Zinc

I've been drinking a lot of orange juice. I guess I should pick up some actual vitamins.

Sweat it out, fast and effective.

Just get a bunch of blankets, the hotter the better. Lay down in bed, cover yourself up, turn the heat on high, and sweat like crazy. Once you have done that, change your sheets, they will smell like shit. But, you should feel a lot better. Thats how I usually get rid of sickness. I'm usually not much on medicine except advil or tylenol for headaches, and benedryl for allergies and insomnia. I dunno, never been a big fan of medicine.

I too am not one much for medicine. I don't think I've taken medication for anything in the past.... 4 years. I'm honestly tempted too now because this headache is mind-numbing. I'll try out your idea first. I need to wash my sheets anyway, what's an extra bit of sweat?
I hope my room mate doesn't get pissed... Hahah

cool, ya, i don't guarantee that it will work. It works for me, but that doesn't mean it will work for you. It's just a suggestion. And trust me, it is not pleasant, it will actually get downright miserable if you do it right. I try to even cover up my head as best I can, taking breaks to breath normally when absolutely needed. The extra heat from my breath under the covers seems to help.

Anyway good luck! Hope this helps, if not, sorry I wasted your time

Believe it or not, orange juice is actually not the best way to ingest vitamin C. Your body can only ingest and process so much Vitamin C. What your body can't process, you piss out (unlike, say, alcohol where you puke it out). So guzzling massive amounts of OJ is just wasting money. I'd highly suggest buying time-released vitamin C. I try and stay on a regimen of 1000mg vitamin C pills that are time release. That way, I get the maximum amount of vitamin C over an 8 hour period. 1000mg of C is about 1600% your recommended daily, by the way... contrast that to OJ, which is about 60% of your RDV per 8oz... so you can see how you would need to drink a ton of OJ over the course of 24 hours to get the same benefit.

I love that stuff when I'm sick. Something so comforting about warm, slightly sweet lemony tea that knocks you out and makes all the aches and pains go away. So nice!

PS- When your cold advances to the point of couging, I would suggest going to the pharmacy and asking for the legitimate cough syrup... it's worth it. Ideally, you could get the cough syrup with codeine but that requires an RX. If you ask for the behind the counter stuff, they will log your name into a database to make sure you aren't manufacturing meth, but unlike the OTC cough syrup, the stuff actually works.

Good luck!

Well I'll give some advice for really getting better and for faking it till you make it.

Real stuff:

Theraflu, hot tea, you get the idea.
RED MEAT: believe it or not, it's gotten me through stuff the doctors couldn't even ID. (or vitamin equivalents if you're a veggie)
REST
hot showers.
Chicken noodle soup (scientifically proven even if it's just a placebo)
Ricolia
(sp?)

Fake it till you make it.

Vicks Vapor Inhaler (about the size of a chap stick tube) - fixes a stuffy nose in a jiffy
Day quil- takes care of your daily symptoms and gives you the energy to act close to normal
Muscinex- if you're having a lot of phlem it really helps
Cepacol throat spray- numbs your throat in one spray, no lie. Plus it has an angled nozzle so you can make sure you don't hit your tongue.

Now with all this stuff (usually the generic versions) I've made it through the day with a fever, body aches, congestion, and sore throat without people even knowing I felt bad.

It's not the Vitamin C that actually does the job. It's the citrus acifying your system so the virus can't replicate and dies off. It literally makes your bloodstream inhospitable to the virus. OJ, grapefruit and even lemonaide with do that for you. I never take medication for a cold. Lots of citrus juices, and keep warm enough to burn it out can usually get rid of it in less than 5 days for me. Sometimes in as little as two if my immune system is up to par.

Take two naproxen sodium, and eat everything for a day or two with very hot hot sauce so that you drink a lot of water while eating, eat lots of juicy fruit, and you should be good in a day. This will make you sweat just about everything out of your system, get rid of congestion, and make you feel amazing. Works on the flu and common cold wink.gif

I would definitely smoke hookah if I could, but I can't

As for everyone that suggested TheraFlu, I think I'll try that out soon. Whenever I get the money and can find a way to Walgreens.
I slept for 12 hrs last night and I accidentally did the "sweat it out" technique Delsol suggested. I turned up the heat and I kept turning it up because it wasn't going on. I guess in the middle of the night it kicked in and I woke up sweating. So I just laid there under my 3 covers sweating. I'm not going to lie, I do feel a little better. I don't have a cough anymore and my throat isn't that sore. So thanks Delsol!

I just need to get more vitamins in my diet. I haven't taken any in the longest time... I'll get some of the Vitamin C ones. Any others that are good for you that can help prevent illness?

i believe in sweating it out....turn up the heater, pile on the blankets, wear sweaters...and see if you can take a nap.

i forget the exact reason why this supposedly works...something about the virus not being able to live in a hot environment...which is why you get a fever, your body's natural defense to cooties...

Sweating it out, Theraflu, hot tea, honey, and acidic fruit are the best.

Hot tea and Theraflu do the same thing, the heat soothes the aggravation of a sore throat and suppresses your cough. Im in the hot tea and honey remedy right now, got a funky cough but Im getting over strep throat, which could be why Im coughing.

Acidic fruits do just what has been stated before, they up the acidity level of your body naturally so anything foreign is not able to reproduce and continue to keep you ill.
