so i just saw a commercial where some lady is ordering shoes online and is all scared (stereotypical right? a women ordering shoes and being scared to order online. every female i know refuses to order anything online besides my sister she has no cc and my mom on ebay but ONLY buy on ebay not sell or buy anywere else) and then some shady black guy on a laptop on nigeria has her identity and prints it off and some kid runs it down the street and into some secret entrance to some guy that looks like nelson mandella. who the fuck believes that identities are stolen this way? its kind of like orbits "hovercraft"

WTF? I had my identity stolen (well my Credit card number) by a college aged kid who was my waiter at the restaurant we ate at.. I believe more Identities are stolen by punk computer hackers than people in Nigeria..

I hate TV comercials period, I kiss the feet of the man who invented the DVR, so I can Fast forward through that garbage..

actually most are stolen with CC skimmers, dumpster diving and through plain stupidity. i rather order from amazon than go to the bowling ally because the guy could easily skim my card

edit: also who cares about tivo if 90% of people believe this crap well going to get retarded laws passed like the dmca or a e-prohibitionesk law Edited by destructo

i just dont understand who sees this commercial and goes "oh now it makes sense if i buy this nothing will happen" how will this "service" stop someone from going into your trash or skimming your card at burgerking or stop someone from hacking into some random vendor and taking their info?

ya well my mom buys a ton of absolute crap on ebay but she REFUSES to sell on ebay because she is "going to get scammed and screwed out of money" also she refuses to by anything online because "its cheaper and easier to go to bestbuy. plus they will get hacked and ill get my credit card stolen like last time" and by last time she means she got it skimmed at a bowling ally and the same day i ordered her a printer off newegg

Reminds me of the home security commercials. Woman in the middle of the day or night, some guy in all black (even in the day) breaks into the house, so of course she runs upstairs where she is trapped. Every commercial is the woman in distress...

Thats why I use Wachovia-Wells Fargo. Any charges outside of my zipcode are minotored and after $50 they call me.

Those who don't believe crime has gone global might want to pick up a copy of "The Merger by Jeffrey Robinson". It's a serious eye opener. I hate to say it, but I know quite a few serious criminals. The kind good enough or smart enough they rarely if ever get caught. Major crime like identify theft isn't as simple or local anymore as most people would like to think. It's now gone completely world wide using resources out of reach for Joe Dectective here in the USA. And we have technology to thank for it.

I got hit by account fraud a year ago. Wachovia was pretty amazing. They shut it down, moved money, get me new cards and numbers within two business days. That's why I'm still with them. I'm not so sure when they officially go Wells Fargo that they're going to be anywhere as good as Wachovia has been on customer service.

I've had all sorts of wierd shit happen to me and my accounts. let me just say THIS I'd be more afraid of freecreditreport.com than anything else, stay away people, stay away! the credit report is free but its $15 a month for the service and guess what... its pulled directly from your account.

I know how the local stuff is done as well. But I positively guarantee you, it's also international. Do the research outside the classroom. How do I know? My room mate for a year made her living through identity theft.

im willing to bet you a tangiers that she didnt intercept a 3rd party ordering from a site that she had nothing to do. in order to do what the commercial shows the "hacker" would have to mitm attack them or hack into the site. the lady is ordering on amazon and when she puts it thought the "hacker" gets her info. in order to do that he would have to either set up a fake site with ssl mitm which would be detected but anyone that isnt retarded since the cert would change, phish her (which this wouldnt protect her from) or hack amazon. no service can protect from any of those 3. the first 2 are you being retardedand the 3rd you have no control over. also according to pci standards your CC transactions have be encrypted end to end. i would look at what i said the commercial described and what the pci standards dictate. your roommate was either a) a liar cool.gif phished people which this wont stop c) dumpster dove which this wont stop or d) skimmed which this wont stop. they didnt hack amazon or find a ssl exploit

Nobody who earns their living continuously from identity theft bothers with the internet. Too miuch tracking and blocking software in place. Guaranteed to send you eventually to jail. Here's only one scenario used: You swipe your card at the corner grocery up the street. Not a chain, just the little corner liquor and market. Your card goes through the reader and is approved just like anywhere else. What you don't know is that maybe in the back of the store is a duplicate "reader" which captures the information and gets a copy of your transmission. That reader connects not to your bank, but to a receiver overseas where they can even reprint the card itself if necessary. (They have the leisure to decrypt of which there's plenty of software available.) The internet isn't for the real criminals who continue their very lucrative lifestyles. They know too much about it to touch it and risk their freedom. And I guarantee you she wasn't lying. Sorry, but you're speaking from theory and classroom. I'm speaking ffrom having actually watched it and still having the connections to people who don't believe in living within the law. They know I don't agree with what they do, but years have earned us a level of trust that allows us to maintain friendships of a sort without my endorsing or approving of their business.

well then guess what? your roommates actions have 0 to do with what the commercial showed. and what you described is called skimming. another way to do this is to put an actual skimmer over atm swipes and then put a "info box" that has a hidden camera pointing at the pad. never use an atm that has a box with shit in it on the atm. also you could put a stand alone atm. i personally never use standalone atms and never use a CC when eating out because its too easy for a waiter/ess to have a hand held skimmer. this commercial specifically showed a woman who was uneasy ordering shoes online from amazon and a hacker in nigeria magicly gets her info and passes it along. shit doesnt work that way in real life. your roommate has a cool story but it has nothing to do with this.
