ryno
Foil windcovers work great, but your hookah is only as stable as the person holding it and your driving skills. If you have some extra money, you can get one of these- http://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-2808-leila-...ble-hookah.html

Rani
This keeps coming up and quite frankly, I continue to be amazed by the lack of intelligence in the general population. When you're in the car behind the wheel, you're supposed to be driving. Not eating, not using the cell phone, not smoking a hookah, not with your girlfriends head in your lap. People actually die out there from distracted drivers causing accidents. Why is it so damned hard to take a leisurely drive and stop at a rest stop to smoke in peace?'Rani

antouwan
i did this a while ago when i had my QT. no one else was in the car. just me, the wind cover and the qt. the wind cover will help prevent any major/crazy accidents. i'm gonna tell you right now: do not expect anything remotely close to a somewhat good 'session'. even with your gf giver her attention to the hookah, the simple condition of being in your car makes it unmanageable. i would recommend to just save the tobacco and coals for a session when you arrive. Don't take away all the fun.....plus, relieves road rage nothing but Love for you RaniPS: I agree to an extent though, esp about the smoking part. I've been tempted to pick up a lelia to smoke while driving but honestly I'd rather relax and smoke and secondly, I don't let anyone smoke anything in my car, so even if it is hookah I don't want to break my own rule. Let's say you've got a 4 hour road trip. Why not check a map first, plan a stop to set up and smoke and chill for a bit. Maybe get something to eat at the same time. It makes the trip seem less of a stressful drive. I used to drive from Santa Ana in Orange County to 5 minutes South of the Staples Center every day for work. For those in Southern California you know that can be 30 minutes or 3 hours depending on traffic. No joke. I always kept a hookah in my trunk with everything I needed. If traffic was bad a couple of us would hang out at a local restaurant outside with the hookah going. Throw in some wings and a couple drinks and we were set for a few hours. The alcohol wears off about the time traffic clears and road rage is totally eliminated. I could get home at 9:00 pm wired from the road, or at 9:00 pm relaxed from hanging with friends. The idea is that the trip should be part of the fun. Not trying to barrel it through distracting yourself. 'Rani
Bulldog_916
+1 to Rani, I agree that there really is no reason to smoke in the car while driving, none. You're taking your life and someone else's life in your hands. If you take your eyes off the road for any length of time, it's bad. Dont smoke hookah in your car. You can wait for a rest stop or wait to get to your destination. I drove 9.5 hours to get to San Diego and didnt have the urge to smoke in the car at all. You can do the same. Amn_sinclair
now here is my question what if your not the one driving? Your sitting in the back seat on a road trip... i have considered doing this a few times but never had any quick lights to try and do this with. it is high on my list of things to try though
Bulldog_916
I say heir on the side of safety and still dont do it. If you get into an accident and coals go flying everywhere, you still have a big freakin ember making contact with likely flammable materials. A recipe for disaster. Think if you were knocked unconscious, not unheard of in car accidents. You're not awake as this ember starts burning through your flesh or your seat covers or whatever it happens to touch. Bam you're engulfed smoke and flame as your skin is roasted off your body all because you had to have a hookah while driving.

poncho
i've driven a few times from various locations and smoked a hookah, but the longeest is usually NJ To Cleveland or vise vesa, and I have found a few things:- my mya qt fits perfectly in my ford explorer center console so that eliminates someone having to hold it which seems like a horrible idea- I bungie cord the stem to the part of the console that flips up, and you need to make sure this is stable, so it wont slide around at all- i have found that a clip lid windcover version works ok, but the foil ring around the top of the bowl works perfect just so the coals dont slide around- you need to have a window open, and if your getting big clouds, the smoke when you exhale does make it a bit distracting to drive, and also the wind blowing the smoke around is annoyingim driving to Chicago tomorrow, and will probally make this happen again, it is a pain, but i mostly do it for my passengers. Keeps them quiet (traveling with 5 other people in my car)be careful and have fun and be smart about it, there are ways to do it somewhat safely, but it is in no way shape or form something i would call a safe activity i also keep a water bottle near by if my passenger needs to extinguish a straying coal! ih303
Agstevens makes a good point about people smoking cigarettes while driving. This doesn't really seem to create much of a hazard. The biggest problem with hookah, though, is heat management. Having to light, ash, and rotate coals is what proves to be the biggest hassle.I still find it hard to believe that no one has come up with an electric head heater THAT WORKS. I understand what makes burning coals unique is they get hotter when you inhale. Maybe installing some sort of pitot tube in the bowl that detects air flow and increases heat relative to the rate of air flow. I don't know. It would be cool to smoke in the car. I just have no desire to burn up my interior with coals and sparks or get in a wreck while adjusting my coals.

alexander
QUOTE (agstevens @ Nov 5 2009, 08:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>i just figured if people can smoke cigarettes why not the hookah. I agree with you about distractions, they can be deadly. The biggest difference between smoking cigarettes and hookah is simply the volume of smoke produced. Cigarette smoke is nowhere as dense as hookah smoke, so there would be the potential of your view becoming obscured. I'm experiencing this right now as I smoke at my computer, the clouds completely block the screen. Also, I love watching how the smoke interacts with air currents whenever I smoke, so if you're anything like me this would be a huge distraction while on the road. I wouldn't risk it.As far as smoking as a passenger on a long road trip, I don't see much of a problem with it, as long as its not distracting the driver. It would certainly make the trip much more enjoyable. There's no way I would do it without a Leila, or a similar hookah with the coals completely trapped inside with no chance of them sliding off. vickstephanie
I keep really wanting to try this out, and almost actually did it last weekend (when I wasn't even going to be the one driving). I actually got the hookah completely ready except for the coal, right before I ditched the idea completely. It seems like one of those things that is probably a really great idea in theory, but a really horrible idea in practice. Plus I feel like it would be really awful to get pulled over while having a hookah going. Even if you've got nothing to hide, it pretty much gives them a pretty good reason to make you sit there while they either search your car or wait for them to get a warrant
SloppyJoe
I think It'd be cool to fabricate a van or something to hold one. Or even any car, truck or suv. Make sure it's 100% secure, in every way possible. The bigger the vehicle, like a van would be better for handling all the smoke clouds. I don't think it's the worst idea ever, but if you get distracted easily and haven't overlooked everything to make sure your plan is flawless, then I'd go ahead and say Fail.
