The Leaning Tower Of Km

Recommended Posts

Since I first got my Khalil Mamoon King Tut, there has been a lean to it. Sometimes it isn't too bad but most of the team its gots a terrible lean to it. I tried trimming the grommet a little bit, it helped some, but now, a week later, its back to its terrible lean.
Anyone else have this problem?
Any recommendations to resolve this issue?

Should I just cave and buy a new base grommet from HJ...I know each hookah varies and has to be sized up, so I dunno if I could get the right one...

make sure its not the actual stem, my roomates KM has a slight lean to it and it cannot be fixed, the pipe for some reason has a slight lean

I can tell that the stem is straight, but is leaning...its something to do with the connection to the vase...I am wondering if it is just too top heavy or it is the grommet...and its especially scary because I smoke with a lot of rookies, they tend to accidentally pull on the hose which the lean can make it easier for a knockover...

id try another grommet if that doesnt work, sand the inside of the actual base to give a little more grip, what we ended up doing was taking tape and putting it stickyside up on our grommet, adds a little grip making it harder for the stem to lean

Also make sure it's not the base itself. I've seen a few hookahs come into the lounge where the base itself is crooked up where it connects to the shank.

Obviously, Egyptian hookah companies have never heard of Quality Assurance.

hey now they are made with love lol, but most hand made hookahs have some little discrepancies but for the most part are pretty well put together pipes

yep...that's what i did with my AF...the grommet that came with it was either shitty or just the way the grommet and vase matched up with shitty...

either way, i tossed the grommet and just replaced it with electrical tape...now the AF sits flush and straight on the vase...

I really like how some MYA's actually screw onto the base. Someone ought to come up with a mod to attach a screw-together coupling to an Egyptian shank/base juncture. I'd buy it. smile.gif

funny you say that, i just type in the chatroom i wish km's were screw on..lol

When you take the stem out does the inner ring opening of the base look straight? There is probably a lean in this portion of the glass and everyone is right if you adjust the grommet to compensate you can get it plum. You can also try twisting the stem to to face another direction in the base as most black rubber vase grommets have a uneven thickness on them... thanks Egyptian Engineering. rolleyes.gif

The grommet seems to be slightly off

I just now trimmed the bottom and top ring of the grommet and the bottom of it(there was an extra lip)...the lean isnt as bad now. May need a new one, but measuring them without the vendor having the stem could be a problem.
I'm considering that if my next surgery on the grommet isnt successful, I might just try the electrical tape approach.

Thanks everyone

My MYA Gyro does the same thing. However, I think it's cause the stem is bent. (Long story short, the inner stem got rusted to the outer decorative stem pieces, and I tried to wrench them apart, to no avail, and I think it bent it).

But, I agree with the majority, the gasket is your prob. The electrical tape solution seems best to me

i've always thought that electrical tape has a nasty smell to it.

what i do is take a sheet of aluminum foil and fold it into about the width of a ruler stick. Then I basically wrap it around the grommet. Push it down into the base and adjust if not fitted correctly. You should have no problem with the technique once mastered. KM's will do this, no biggie. Eventually once done right, your KM will stand tall, straight and talented. Edited by wonder

use electrical tape to make your own grommet...my MZ has a wicked lean to it, so i just used electrical tape to balance everything out...

+1
I just bought my first km trimetal tonight(pics coming soon) and it had the same problem, not to mention the grommet was 4 sizes too big. electrical tape works great.

take a piece of scrap cloth and get it damp and wrap it in there. alternatively, you could get some sewing thread and wrap it around A LOT and then seal it up with some petroleum jelly like vaseline or something, a cousin of mine did that with one of his pipes.

my KM kind of does the same thing. The special circumstances being the jumbo base I use with it and the additions to the grommet to seal the base. I use a large grommet wrapped in electrical tape with a silicone band over the tape. It requires periodic attention as when I separate the pipe from base it tends to loosen, but re wrapping the tape and pushing the silicone band up gets rid of the lean till the next time.
