What Bowl Should I Be Using?

Recommended Posts

I am currently using a 6-hole egyptian bowl, style can be seen HERE.
I keep reading about Phunnels and Funnels and I can't help but wonder if I am roughing the kicker with this particular bowl type.

is something like THIS what I should be going for?

My goal is to have a full smooth smoke for an hour or so. I know I need to switch from 3Kings QL's to another coal (i've been reading on this forum about which are the best) but I want to make sure I have a premium bowl before I make an investment on coals.

help and thanks in advance!

use the original tangiers phunnnel not a asian made one..also the best naturals to use are coconaras, johns ch coals, and golden canaries..all of wich can be found here http://www.hookahjohn.com/main.sc;jsession...26.qscstrfrnt02

john is the best in the business if you order $45 or more you get 10% discount using coupon code HF13, but for the month of november if you order $75 or more you get 15% off your order using coupon code Thanks15

The larger Egyptian bowls are much better quality compared to the small ones Egyptian ones, and the Tangiers are the best heads over all. The packing of the mass'eel and coal placement is probably more important compared to the quality of the head tho. The small Tangiers's are still a bit of tobacco to part with and it will take me 2 or 3 sessions to finish one flavor. Which is fine when I am by myself but when company wants to try multiple flavors, you should have spare heads or extra hookahs.
Natural coals are my personal choice they are harder to light and will have a bit more ash, but they burn hotter and longer compared to most disk instant lights.
Hope that helps

I have always been a fan of the Egyptian bowl. Recently, I decided to buy a Tangiers Phunnel bowl knowing that I might be disappointed. I was wrong. The Tangiers phunnel really makes the shisha last longer, and it smokes great. I have not use a Egyptian since I tried the Tangiers phunnel 2 months ago.

As for the coals, once you go natural you never go back. I like coconaras, but I use Lemon wood as well.

Roughing the kicker??? I've never heard the phrase, what does it mean?

I have one of the phunnels you linked to, I love it. I get hour long+ sessions with it all the time. Personally, I have not mastered the art of setting up long sessions (I keep trying) and using most natural square coals (Coco's and Shishacos) never got me past 45 minute sessions. Didn't matter if I added more coals or not. Diamantes, which are a bit of a pain to use, are what finally helped me get hour long and 90 minute sessions.

honestly, they all work. imo, a phunnel is best. you get a great amount of smoke because the draw is just far superior. due to the phunnel's design, no other traditional head can get nearly the good draw out of a pull as you can with the phunnel.

personally, i wouldn't buy chinese. why? because i'm not a huge fan of the commies? yeah, sure. but that isn't the main point. I would buy the original tangiers http://www.hookahcompany.com/tangiers_smal...l_2070_prd1.htm - and i have, i currently have 5 smalls, 1 medium, and 1 large super chief (and there were 2 that i broke). i've seen the chinese knock-offs in person and it looks like they were made by a child. . .which they probably were. my point is that the original phunnels are made using better materials and labor that actually consists of hookah smokers - not some random people half way across the world who probably don't even know what a hookah is.

get the original tangiers phunnel (everyone should have at least one...best innovation for hookah evar!!) and some Golden Canarys.

actually, i'd skip the phunnel if you don't plan on smoking Tangiers at all...the egyptian will work well with everything else...

and this is why I joined the forum. a few hours and over a dozen responses.

"Roughing the Kicker."
Definition: Flagrantly running into or hitting the kicker (USA Football) after the ball has been kicked.Roughing the kicker is a personal foul and results in a 15-yard penalty against the offending team.

Cool... I shall look into Phunneling and acquiring some Tangiers smoke from Uncle John. Doesn't seem TOO expensive. I've never seen the brand in stores around here either. Probably cause it's pricey or something.

Okay then, thanks for the advice. keep it comin' if you want to add something!

Hmm, so you're wondering if you're ruining your sessions with those Egyptian bowls? I don't like smoking out of the really small Egytians. I never have good sessions that way, too short. I do have one wider, but very shallow one, that isn't too bad. I do better with the wide ceramic Syrian bowl that I got from H-L or one of my windcover bowls than I do with the wide Egyptian. But nothing beats the Phunnel (for me) for any type of shisha. It's just a medium generic (probably Chinese) phunnel that I got at H-S, but I love it. It's solid, easy to clean, holds enough shisha for a 90 minute session.... can't complain a bit about it. Well, H-S calls it a large but from everything I've read, I'm pretty sure that compared to the large Tangiers Phunnel, it's just a medium. I usually smoke alone though so I'm not complaining. Good price, good bowl, solid, works great, holds plenty of shisha. I have two of them, actually. Liked the first one so much that I ordered a second as backup and they look identical on the outside but i notice that they made some design changes inside the shaft of the thing to make it more solid and easier to clean. Love the upgrade. And I love that they did it without raising the price.

Do not buy that bowl.
Get this one
http://www.hookahcompany.com/tangiers_smal...l_2070_prd1.htm

Trust me it costs a wee bit more but you do get what you pay for. I have played with both and I guarantee you that nothing compares to an original tangiers phunnel.

For coals I'd go for either the CH naturals or the CH quick lights. And for shisha I'd say Naklah particularly the mizo line. (Best bang for the buck) and tangiers. (Best bang period!) There are plenty of tutorials for packing both in the phunnel so go ahead and enjoy. Feel free to search around and read up, trust me I learned all I need to that way. If you have any really specific questions feel free to PM me if you see the need. Enjoy!

Awesome! Thank you, guys!

I'm gonna have to wait about a month for cash funds to accumulate but I am seriously going to do what you dudes suggest. This is great. I've had my hookah for about 3 months and I've had some really good sessions now that I have shisha that isn't screwed up. Now that I have this community to learn from I am gonna blow minds!! my friend that gave me my pipe hasn't modified his pipe at all and next time we hang I'm gonna show him how I can blow concentric rings and that my pipe is WAY more air tight than his rig. He's gonna be MAD JEALOUS!! Hahahaaa!! I can't wait.

Thanks for the help and I'm thinking about printing off some of these guides!

Always been a huge fan of these regular old clay egyptian bowls moreso than anything else. I've tried just about everything - phunnel bowls, glass bowls, tangiers standard bowls, mod bowls, etc. I never get as great of a smoke as with the standard egyptian, even with Tangiers.
