Sin on Sunday
i went to hookahjohns website after reading so much about him, deciding i would buy some shisha and a phunnel from him. so i saw the vortex bowlhttp://www.hookahjohn.com/product.sc?productId=307which from the looks and description is the exact same as a phunnel. yet its 9.99 as opposed to 15.99. is there a difference? also, the phunnel comes in large medium and small, will any of them fit on my Mya Petite?ALSO (i know, tons of questions), i have been lurking and a lot of people here seem to like Nakhla shisha, yet i read a description of it and it says its low-grade long cut tobacco, and its super cheap. is it just popular cause of the price or is it good shisha too? cause if not i will buy tangiers or whatever else soudns good, maybe romman. SloppyJoe
The Tangiers Phunnel bowl is said to be one of the best recent innovations in hookah culture. The phunnel bowl differs from traditional Egyptian bowls in that the tobacco is placed in a circular trough around a single hole. The trough prevents the "juice" from the tobacco from running down the stem as it does with traditional bowls. This also prevents the tobacco drying out and adding endurance to your smoking session, in both flavor and longevity. These bowls are hand-made in California. Being made of high quality white clay and glazed with glass grade glaze that is all certified non-toxic. They come in an assortment of colors and come in different sizes. Sizes are never exact but are classified as mini, small, medium and large. First of all you will get to hold more tobacco in it. It will also smoke better than a vortex no doubt. The best thing you can pack tangiers and nakhla in...as well as other brands. The more surface area of the bowl the better it will smoke. Spend the extra money and get a tang phunnel! You won't be disappointed. It will change your life....the part that revolves around hookah anyway. But......don't take my word for it. What do I know? The bowl, instead of leaking precious flavor down your stem, holds in all of shisha taste and pulls through the spire in the middle. This allows the shisha packed to smoke longer and stay moist, so it's near impossible to burn. The Vortex Hookah Bowl holds around 25 to 30 grams of shisha." sounds exactly like a phunnel that goes by a different name
SloppyJoe
Oh, and it should fit on your mya petite. Make it taller too. If I were you I would go with a small. They all smoke amazing but imo the large's smoke the best. Tangiers and Nakhla are the best imo hands down! The nakhla mizo line is amazing, and the tangiers lucid line you could say is for beginners that don't smoke often. Try out both you will not be disappointed. Some favorites include nakhla strawberry, nakhla mizo guava, mizo watermelon, tangiers static starlight, tangiers orange soda, tangiers m cherry, tangiers cactus fruit....just to name a few. SloppyJoe
Also, would anyone else agree that a vortex can be much more constrictive? Those are some tiny holes. I can't see that bowl smoking that great.
Jacob Shock
there both amazing bowls. i prefer my phunnel for larger cut shishas such as nakhla, tangiers, and ayam zaman. i perfer my vortex for shishas like al fahker, starbuzz, and hookah freak. ih303
To answer your question, the phunnel bowl gets its name from the inverted "funnel" in the center of the bowl creating the trough-like area where you pack your shisha. Vortex bowls differ from traditional phunnel bowls because the vortex has holes punched into that inverted phunnel to allow for more air flow through the shisha. While this is a good idea in theory, the reality is the holes always get clogged which defeats their purpose entirely and makes it hard to clean. This same effect may be attained through the use of a mod. The two most popular are the Scalli Mod and the Tealight mod (search the forum for more info). It is thought that both have the effect of rerouting the flow of air through the tobacco enhancing the flavor. It is unclear whether or not these mods really improve the smoke since some people say they work and others say they don't. The best way to find out is to try it yourself. I'd say start off with a small phunnel bowl. You will have absolutely no regrets. Unless you're a marathon smoker with 10-15 hour sessions, you'll never come close to needing a large. And it will fit on your MYA.RE: Nakhla. Nakhla is an anomaly in the hookah world. It tastes better, smokes better, and costs significantly less than most of the other brands on the market. Keep in mind, it is unwashed and has been known to give a wicked buzz. I'd say start off with Mizo Watermelon and Guava and go from there. You absolutely cannot go wrong with those two flavors and Mizo has a slightly larger sweetspot for smoke than the other lines so you're less likely to screw it up. Mizo guava and watermelon are amazing flavors and when packed in a small will smoke great. If that buzz gets you try for tangiers lucid. If you like that buzz go with OG tangiers. If you like nakhla you will like tangiers. If you like tangiers you will like nakhla.
NIGHTS OF BAGHDAD
if you plan to smoke tangiers dont go with the vortex, the juices will leak thru the side holes..you need the phunnel with the hole on top to keep your juices intact with the shisha, the vortex is great for your dryer shishas like nakhla but then again you can just use the phunnel for that has well

NIGHTS OF BAGHDAD
well i dont think the vortex is that bad stuie..lol i mean when it comes to tangiers yes you should use the phunnel bowl..period end of story..but ive used the vortex for other shisha and then ive used the same shisha in a Egyptian bowl..and i have gotten bigger clouds from the vortex..people just dont like the vortex because the placement of its holes..fo your more juicer shisha's you can lose alot of the juices down the holes thus making your session not as long or flavorful..but for the dryer shishas its awsome.. ngraz617
The newer Vortex bowls have their holes placed higher and I have never had them clog if when you pack it you take your tongs and push the shisha around the stem down clearing the holes of anything pressing against them. This bowl works great with all shisha but I only smoke Tangiers out of the Phunnel bowl. The Phunnel bowl is also less restrictive then a vortex which still gives you pleanty of smoke but the pull is much better on the Phunnel. The best choice with your hookah is what you're getting the small phunnel and the Mizo and btw the grape is also great as is all the flavors I have tried so far except the apple which I felt they could have used less anise.
