i think Rani's standpoint is, why increase the chances especially if it may affect other people? Remy's standpoint seems to be, the increased risk can be kept to a minimum then it is acceptable to him.

and even though Rani was very passionate about her story...i do believe the Fuck You was still uncalled for...

I've talked to drivers who have caused, through simple negligence, they never thought would happen, horrific accidents. They live with it every single moment of their lives. They wake up thinking about having taken a life, and they go to sleep remembering it. It's not just a matter of the deaths involved. It's the incredible damage to the one who caused it because they thought they were safe enough, but they weren't. I'm intense about it because I've had not just friends but family members who left behind drivers who killed them, not through extreme negligence, but minor distractions. If I can prevent one person, even one, of having to live with that, then I'll accept blame for saying the uncalled for if it gives someone a reason to step back and say whoa.

I don't care how "safe" you think you are driving a car and doing something else. Driving requires 100% concentration at all times.

It took me 2 seconds to change the volume on my radio to not see the 5 year old girl jump in the street.
Needles to say, I still can't sleep properly at nights thinking that I took away someones baby girl.

Don't risk it, it's not worth it

my boyfriend [redrabbit] and two of his buddies just took a 5 hour one way road trip as of 5am this morning...and the thought crossed their mind....but our hookah is way too big and complicated to put in the bunnie and smoke while driving.

I think the thing we need to realise is that, as people have said - anything you do OTHER than driving whilst in a car increases the chance of you throwing 1 + tons of metal into someone/something else at 50kph, and that's not a good thing.

As a motorcyclist i realise even more how important it is to be alert and focussed whilst driving, and even if you think it's fine to multitask while driving i think it's silly to do anything (even smoke a cigarette) while driving. You put your life and other's lives at risk and i don't feel comfortable doing that.

Whether you're in a car or on a motorcycle, you are in control of a powerful machine with huge potential for devastation. If you couldn't handle the worst possible case scenario then don't risk it. If you can't drive and then pull over when you need something else then just skip it.

Last year during a trip with some college buddies we bought a new shisha and we were so eager to try it that we ended up setting it up and smoking it on the trip back to school. It was about an hour and a half drive and it was strictly on the thruway. There were almost no other cars on the road and there were three of us (not including the driver) to tend to it. Now, this is by no means something that I do on a regular basis, but on long road trips I don't think it's so bad if you apply a little common sense.

I think it should be illegal for people to smoke while driving...period, ciggs included. Human life is sacred. Like I said, I can't count how many times I have been cut off by some asshole smoking a cigg while talking on the phone and not paying any attention to the road. I refuse to talk on the phone while driving unless 1. it is an emergency or 2. there is no one else on the road and the only person I am endangering is myself. I have even had times when my mom has called me and I have told her "hey, ill call you back later, im driving right now."

I noticed myself getting addicted to hookah, so I limited myself to only smoking on weekends. I also rarely smoke more than once a day, so that means I smoke between 1 and 3 bowls a week usually. I don't want to waste one of those bowls on driving. I'd rather go to my buddies place, either turn on a movie or some tunes, crack open a beer, heat up my hookah bowl, and enjoy myself.

I think even if I did decide to try it (which I won't), I'm the type of person that is constantly concerned about making sure things are right and the details are taken care ot, so I would be spending more time making sure the hookah is ok then I would enjoying the hookah. For example, I'm the type of person who would cut the electricity to the entire house just incase I forgot to turn off one thing in the house. I double check the oven like 5 times after turning it on just to make sure, stuff like that.

Periodically we go through this discussion. The "younguns" here think it's okay. Those of us who consider ourselves adult enough to hold ourselves responsible for the safety of others on the road with us consider it just plain stupid. We fight enough battles for the legitmacy of our pastime. And idiots want to drag it out onto the roadway? The first, very first, accident anywhere in this country on the road with a hookah in the car is going to do major public relations damage not to mention probably instigating another round of "let's outlaw all the fun stuff". Way to go idiots.

gotta agree with you there 100%, if a car accident does happen and god forbid someone gets killed and they find out the driver was distracted with a hookah its all over..thats the nail in the coffin..and dont think it wont cause look what they did with cell phones..its illegal to be on your cell phone in illinois and if your caught its no if's, and's, or buts..its a $150 ticket i believe

Gotta say, I must completely agree. No good can come of it. There is no way it's not going to distract the driver, regardless of who many people are helping. Going to be a real surprise when there is an accident, and it's found to be your fault in part, only because it's in use in the vehicle at the time. Besides, who want to give the coppers a reason to look at you funny. Hookahs have a strange ability to focus the attention of the LEO community. I can just see some trooper deciding there is NHT in there,getting to do the chicken-walk, and waiting for the NHT dog to show up and sniff through everything. Once they find nothing they gotta cite you up for something just to justify the whole fiasco. Woo-hoo... just how I want to spend an afternoon. Be much more fun to just get home in peace, and enjoy my hookah away from the molestations of the public at large.

I hate to res such an old topic, but I can't seem to find the one I had posts in.

I was involved in a car accident. I was not at fault, I was going North, other guy South turning left, and he turned out in front of me. I can happily report that the leila did not go flying (though it fits in my cup holder perfectly) and the coals remained inside of the hookah. Ill probably continue to use the leila, but I take precautions and never adjust it while driving so I don't feel like its a huge distraction to me.

Looks to me like this is starting to become a flame war between people who are passionate about smoking in their car, and people who have tragic stories about car accidents. If I'm not mistaken, more people die on the road than are killed in Iraq yearly. Either that means our roads aren't safe in the slightest, or our soldiers aren't doing their job. But that's another conversation entirely. In my opinion, it's the distractions so much as poor driving ability. I'm not implying that you're poor drivers. In Germany, they don't seem to have the same road problems we do. I seriously doubt that's because a dearth of people choose to enjoy hookah in the car here.

What I'm getting at here is that it makes a minimal difference when you look at the statistics of it all. As far as the thread goes, people who smoke in their car aren't going to stop, and the people who don't will still think it's wrong. Neither side is going to sway. I think it'd be the best course of action to just agree to disagree here. Let's keep it civil. No "Fuck you's" or anything of that nature. That's when a conversation becomes an argument. Agreed?
