Cleaning non-washable hoses

Recommended Posts

So besides blowing air through these things, is there anything one can do? My hookah has been giving off some funky smells and tastes recently, despite me cleaning it all out several times. Is the problem with non-washable hoses simply that they will rust? Could I theoretically wash the hose then dry the inside out somehow?

What kind of hose is it? If it does have metal coils on the inside, water could set up more rust in a heart beat. Do you have a compressor, or have access to one? If I were in your shoes, I'd try to lightly smack the hose on the floor a couple times, then blow it out with dry compressed air. I can't promise it won't damage the hose, as I don't know what kind it is.
Now, as Surf said "Mya hose." I don't know if they are Myas, but there are a few out there selling some for 5 or six dollard. They look like Myas, but I don't know if they are. I got a couple of them back in the spring of 2004 from www.hookahook.com
Here: http://www.hookahook.com/v1/prodView.asp?i...duct=1444
Of course, they went up a dollar since then. I still use these hoses. Every now and then, I wash them, and blow them out . They still are 100% airtight. Shipping may be a bit higher here, as they are in Beirut, Lebanon. I'm not suggesting you buy them here, but just giving you an idea that good, long lasting hoses can be inexpensive. There are some sites (thehookah.com) were selling the exact hose for 17 dollars. I know, I bought one of them too. The shipping is justified if you purchase 3 or 4 of them. then you have 3 or 4 good hoses for the price of an expensive hose that is the same quality.

Oh crap. I just realized, since there are conspiracy theorists who stick "the affiliation" badgeon anyone who makes a recommendation here.
I am not affiliated with hookahhook.com. I can't even remember the guy's name. It may be Samir, then it may not be. I do have his email, and I realize I shouldn't be telling you this, or I will be accused. But I found out that he doesn't update his site too often, and by me emailing him, he hooked me up with different colors and a free bowl screen to try. Nice guy who likes Americans. But once again, I have no business relations with them, as I don't want to be spied on and have to meet people like Wolfowitz and Cheney and the like.
Now order from them so I can get my kick-back.
Oops, I mean so you can enjoy smoking.
Full of poop on a Sunday (My new Saturday),

I mean, who would imagine I'm affiliated with Tangiers?Try cleaning your pipe, not the hose, with beer, vodka, rum or tequila, use the alcohol to dissolve unfortunate flavors dissolved in there....you never puit milk in your vase...did you?

I have a hose that i am almost sure is "non- washable".  Do not
listen to the filthy lies, with caution you can clean your hose very
well.  Get a funnel or other such device that will insert into one
end of your hose.  Fill the hose with warm (not hot) water and
swish pretty vigourously.  Let the water spill out.
Repeat.  Blow hard and pretty continuously for a few minutes and
hang the hose up vertically to dry so that all the water drips
out.  I have been doing this for my hose for quite some time and
it works well.
Some hoses have stainless steel or brass coils in...making them rustproof but still not washable.
Is there any harm that can come from washing an "unwashable hose" even if it has rust proof coils?

If the inside is porous, I imagine it can taste pretty nasty, even enhance the nastiness from water. Some think that mildew can start inside of it if it isn't blown out really, really good.
Some of my older leather hoses I got in Egypt have just regular, crappy steel coils. Just living down in the dank south caused them to rust on their own. Just invest $6 dollars in a half-way nice hose. You will be far happier.

Yeah definately get a mya hose. I killed my non-washable hose by washing it (didnt know any better at the time) and I have a full size 150psi air compresser yet no matter how much I blew it out everytime i used it i got stuff in my mouth. Got a mya hose and never looked back.

dont wash a 'metal coil' hose. you will know you have one of these right away, by either looking into the hose, or jsut feeling the coils. If you wash one of these, the gratifications are short term, as rust will build up within a day, and in no time you will be inhaling rusty particles. Ive had experiences where i put too much milk into the base, and i got a mouthful of rusty milk (that was in my begging days). Lets just sya i didnt touch hookah for 2 weeks after that! so make the investment, drop 20 bucks and get 2 nice myas, theyll be at your house in no time, and itll be the best investment you mad

Ive always used an air compressor. But the next best thing if you dont
have access to an air compressor is a vacuum. Take a vacuum and put an
attachment with the smallest hole possible and put one end of the hose
up to it. Use the vacuum on both ends of the hose and it usually helps
alot. If you have a shop-vac or a high powered vacuum meant for
contruction type work its alot better but the regular vacuum works
alright too.

Most cheap, "non-washable" hoses have plastic hoses inside.  They
are non-washable because the water will soak through and you will have
a wet mess for a couple of hours (with the possibility of mold
growth).  Just make sure you dry them well by blowing hard through
them for an extended period of time.

But the best advice is to buy a washable, leather MYA hose.  And now it's time for my shameless plug:

We have them for $6 (best price I've found).

If you guys eve decide to "retire" a hose..... do yourself a favor.......
Tear the thing apart and save the end pieces...... next take and tear apart the hose itself...
Most of the time you are going to find this metal coil that has been wrapped in Seran Wrap or the like... the outside "leather" material is actually upholstery material... you will see that the inside is white in color with a felt-like feel to it.
So..... if you do this... you will see first hand what you are dealing with as far as hoses go. What next? take those ends you saved and head to the nearest Home Improvement Superstore and but the right size of this stuff :

by the foot at around 40 cents a foot. have em cut it however long you want it.
Use a hot glue gun just like how "they" did and "voila"..... you got yourself a REALLY washable hose.
