I agree Zion I last album was subpar.

Some crews that are pretty well slept on that are well worth checking out: Solillaquists Of Sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ke0_Q-pwI4...feature=related , Living Legends (speaking of the Grouch and Murs) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWB4XXvrxm8 , Crown City Rockers (Scarub is also in Living Legends) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jp3rElN67R4...feature=related

Some albums that just came out that are well worth checking are

Parallel Uni-Verses (Del and Tame One Produced by Parallel Thought)

Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez (Slug of Atmosphere, Murs, produced by Aesop Rock)

KRS 1 and Buckshot - Survivor Skills

Antipop Consortium - Fluorescent Black

and Edan dropped a megamix that's supposed to be ill, he's releasing 1,000 copies everyone of which has a handmade cover by him with stencil and stamp work on it.

I've checked out that Solliquists of Sound. I like thier sound. Also Felt 2 is pretty good. Aseop Rock's production did the album some decent service. I'm familiar with Living Legends also. Scarub has a new album out. I forgot what the name of it was, but it's dope. I've been wanting to check out that KRS and Buckshot album, but the hookah funds have dipped into my music allowance, lol. I'll be on the lookout for that Edan album. It sounds promising. Edited by thatonethere

To OP,

I dig Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks/Army of the Pharaohs(and any solo stuff from Celph Titled, Apathy, Chief Kamachi), Prolyphic & Reanimator, Adeem, Supernatural, Eyedea & Abilities, Brother Ali... all good stuff.

To everyone else,

The basement does have different levels and just because you start there doesn't mean you stay there smile.gif

Cosign.

Does Celph Titled have a new album out yet? Last time I checked, the only thing I could find of his was The Gatalog album. He's dope. So is Brother Ali. "Us" was nothing short of a work of art. Have you checked out Non Phixion? They are in the same vein of hip hop the guys you mentioned are in. Also Ra The Rugged Man is dope too.
Speaking of Bay Area...Has anybody checked out Hochii's album "Bullets Through the Speaker"? It's an old album but worth the listen.

My apologies but I couldn't resist

The 90's had some really good hip hop coming out, especially in 94. I remember being able to record a whole radio show on a cassette, and each song was good. It used to be hard to get a record deal, and as a result, so many good artists got missed. Nowadays it doesn't matter if you are a good emcee. All you have to do is sell units with a bunch of catchy club hits. Throw Lil Wayne on some of the tracks, some auto tune and there you go. Instant platnum.

This is fine by me though. Amazing underground acts are plentiful. You just have to dig the crates a little in order to find them. These are the guys who keep the hip hop spirit, and culture alive.

the cream of the crop of rappers full stop is just one man

Crooked I.

closely followed by the Horse Shoe G.A.N.G, Nino Bless, Terminology, One-2 and then slaughterhouse.
Crooked I is a solid rapper, however, he needs to quit talking so much shit about other rappers in his spare time. Not everybody can "pull a 50 cent" by making a name off of dissing otherwise great rappers that have longevity in the game. The Horse Shoe G.A.N.G. is dope even though they have a dumb name, lol. Termanology needs to make a full album already. Sometimes I think his mixtape rapper status makes people not want to see his potential.
