Surround Sound

I'm looking to get my parents a surround sound system for the holidays. They just got a new plasma tv and I feel it would be appropriate over their 20-30 year old 3 foot speakers they have now. I am running lower on cash these days with being at school and not working, but they have done so much for me that I would like to spend some of the little I have left to do this for them.

Can anyone help me find a decent surround sound system?
They have a JVC receiver thingy, I dunno tech stuff. It has options for radio(radio built in), tape player(they have one and its hooked up), dvd(hooked up), cd(6 disc hooked up), and what not. So I'm assuming I dont need a "converter box" or whatever the devil it is. If a package includes one, its all good cuz they'll have better technology and I'll get the old one...and will it be able to hook up to the tv for listening thru fios cable?

I'm looking to spend upto $250 excluding shipping. If you can find a nice one for cheaper, that really helps because I'm not doing good on the pocket book right now.

I saw what looks like some decent ones on overstock.com and newegg.com, but again, I don't know squat.

Also, what kind of accessories would I want to buy with it? This will be hooked up to a plasma tv, so are there special cords I need?

I know nothing about these things and thats why I'm reaching out to my friends on here.
Thanks in advance for the help guys.

I bought one hdmi cable and one headphone jack cable to try to engineer the jvc home theater box to connect...but I have no idea how to get this to connect to the cable...my bro-in-law read over the information on this system and it looks like it is going to be difficult from what he said

you mean cable box? if your tv isnt hd then it wont help especially since dont have hdtv inputs, but if the system you bought comes with a dvd player or blu ray player then connect one end into the dvd/blu ray player and the other end into the receiver that came with the home theater and that will give you a better picture when watching dvds or blu rays

in the back you will see it says hdmi in and hdmi out..put 1 end of the cable wire in the in and the other end in the back of your cable box..then take another hdmi cable wire and put 1 end into the back of your tv where it says hdmi out and the other end into the back of your receiver..if you want you can also use another hdmi cable to go from your reciver to your dvd/blu ray player

from what I was told, the new system has only an out...it is a dvd player that also is the receiver, not two separate units...I'm hoping for two hdmi ports to make life easier
