In my quest for flavor....

Recommended Posts

In my quest for a more intense flavor from my hookah, I used my smoke points I had collected at Southsmoke to help purchase:1 box of Golden Japanese Charcoals1 bag of Nours finger coals1 ceramic bowl with lidI read reviews that the abu haitham japanese coals are better than the golden, but the golden are very good as well.  Since the Abus aren't coming in for a while and I need to figure this out I went with the Goldens.  I also got a bag of Nours.  So between the Japanese, the finger coals, and my 3 kings, SOMETHING has got to give me more flavor.P.S.  If you haven't read my previous threads.  I have a Mya QT, with mya hoses, mya bowl.  I've used a few different brands of tobacco and at most gotten solid flavor (mostly from Tangiers) for 15 minutes or so.  The only thing I can think of that is not allowing the flavor to come through to its fullest is the coal.

Next time i smoke i am going to use the natural olivewood egyptian
coals i got at my local shop.  They are in discs and i got them
accidentally because the guy at the shop mistook them for 3 kings
coals.  Anybody know the  coals i am talking about?

Sweet.  So I definitely got a bag of Nours finger coals.Does anyone have any info on those Japanese Coals I got?  I read Tangiers reviews of Canary Jap. Coals and Golden Jap. Coals and apparently they are very different quality so I'm hoping they are the Golden Jap. Coals.

Grrr....I e-mailed Southsmoke and asked them about the Japanese Charcoals I bought and here is the response I got:"The Canary and Golden style Japanese Charcoal are currently not available. We are awaiting these brands for future supply. At the moment, it is the type of Japanese Charcoal in a red box. There are three pieces per stick instead of four. It is still the same size, except each piece is bigger. These are authentic Japanese style Charcoals with the stamp "Made In Japan" on the box. They are not the type that say Japanese Charcoals and are made in China."Has anyone tried THESE Japanese Charcoals? I'm a little PO'd that they showed a picture of one thing and sold me something else.  Hopefully they're good.

There are like 10 brands that are the same as Nour coals out there.  I have tried a couple.  Their problem is when they are half let or if you light them indoors, they smell like sh*t ....
Don't they have to be lit on a stove?  How are you gonna do that anywhere BUT inside?
Most stove-lit coals can also be lit with a torch liter, or a mini torch

Hey Smashraj84,
I can definitely empathize with you and your situation. In hopes of getting a better smoke myself, and after reading favourable reviews for Golden Japanese charcoals, I also placed an order with South Smoke. Not having the inside scoop on Hookah Company’s supply, I ordered from South Smoke under the same assumptions as you, and am now finding myself somewhat disheartened at the possibility of receiving 2 boxes of some generic Japanese brand.  I think my order went through a few days before yours, so perhaps there is still some hope…wishful thinking?? Anyhow, it is scheduled to arrive later on today so, like you, I’m just hoping they’ll be good. If you haven’t received yours yet I’ll let you know how it goes.
In the meantime, fingers crossed...
Laura
I can't recall them selling coals, but that isnt to say that they don't. They do have for sure HH tobacco, and hookahs. So it'd make sense if they sold coals as well.

Siren- Mine are coming today as well.  I won't be able to use them cause I'll be out of town though.  Post a review of them if you get a chance.  Thanks.Web-I won't be in Newark til 8 or 9 tonight so I won't be able to hit up Frolic.  Maybe on Saturday.

I went home on my lunch break and picked up my package.  The finger coals are Nours (the picture is showing one side of the bag, on the other side is NOURS).  The ceramic bowl looks pretty damn cool, can't wait to use it tonight. The japanese coal are, like they said, in a red box with no other writing besides SILVER COALS and made in japan on it.  I didn't open up the box yet to look at them though.Siren, lemme know how they smoke.

Hi again,
I’ve been religiously tracking my order through FedEx and apparently it just arrived like 10 minutes ago. Unfortunately, I won’t have time to run across the border and pick it up before the shipping company closes. Even worse, they’re closed on weekends! I’ve been dying to get a hold of some new flavours, as my stockpile is running pretty low, so I’m pretty disappointed. But anyways, I unfortunately won’t be able to get back to you until Monday at the earliest and I’m assuming that, by then, you’ll probably have sampled them for yourself. So please do let me know how it goes, as I’ve been pretty curious since reading your post last night.
Thanks.

In the area of lighting naturals, I always recomend a small butane camping stove.  I like it better than a torch because I don't have to hold it.  I can set a coal on it and then sit and wait.  I only smoke outside, and the camping stoves are compact and work great.

There are no good Japanese charcoals that I am aware of that come three per bar...one characteristic to look for is how cleanly are they made? If they look rough and irregular, they are of poor quality. Canary distributes tow Japanese charcoals. One is claimed to be made in Japan, the ones that come three to a bar,  but the representative told me they are made in the Middle East. They are exceptionally poor. As I said in a review "If they smoke hookah in hell, these are the charcoal they use." The price is about $1.50 vs. $6 per box, similar weights. That is $6 for the real Canary golden Japanese charcoal, which ar very good charcoal, worth the extra money.

Here is what they actually look like.  They don't seem to be rough or irregular at all.  If anyone has tried these or has any info on them, lemme know.  I think I'm gonna hold off on them until I hear more info.

man, u really waste ur time reviewing this japanese charcoal.
i have tried it before and it is fine. it is definately authentic japanese charcoal. i spoke with some people over at south smoke and they said they are awaiting the abu haitan brand. they said it is hard to come across right now. i understand what ur saying, but the japanese charcoal in the picture is no knock off - its the real thing made in japan - just different company.
listen to what i say, ive tried them all.

Why am I wasting my time?  Because YOU tried this coal.  We all know one man's favorite is another man's garbage.I haven't used either of the new coal because I haven't had that much time to smoke, but I did use the new bowl with the clip on screen and wind cover and viola!  I have flavor!
