Hookie The Hookah
Title says it all, I broke my phunnel a few nights ago (again... ) and I've been smoking Lucid out of my only other bowl with arguably better results than I got with the phunnel to begin with (Lucid Horchata had been finnicky for some reason with my phunnel lately, OG on the other hand was gravy). While I wait till the weekend to make the hour drive to pick up a new phunnel I really want to get down with my Tangiers samples out of this bowl. I tried packing OG watermelon the other night but the smoke was thin and slightly harsh. I don't have any trouble smoking OG out of a phunnel so I figure getting it to smoke well out of this here shallow wide egyptian is within the range of my abilities... Anyone got any tips? I've heard a few conflicting perspectives on how to pack non-phunnels...

I've heard a few conflicting perspectives on how to pack non-phunnels...I personally get better luck with Egyptians than the funnel. It could be the coals I use, it could just be my personal way of handling the tobacco. Someone has pictures on here of how they pack Tangiers in an Egyptian and I'm sure they'll repost them for you. For me, I just scoop up together a golf ball sized portion (tightly packed), dump it into the Egyptian so it's about 1/4 inch above the rim, and press it down slightly when I put on the foil. Hella lot of holes at least the middle thickness of the toothpick. One CH coal dumped on top and I'm good to go.'Rani

Trying that method with OG didn't work though...
inino
I pack it tight around the outside of the bowl and looser in the middle to keep airflow. They dont last nearly as long as the phunnel its doable until you get a new phunnel. coals are trial and error.
NIGHTS OF BAGHDAD
only problem is it makes a big mess down your stem and in your vase with all the leakage from the juices..

I think the juices leaving the bowl is a problem that is pretty overblown around these parts... Either way I'd be using almost half in this bowl compared to a phunnel so having the session be shorter is completely reasonable.

Nope.the coals are closer togeter on an egyption bowl compared to a tang phunnel. and it will burn if you put that much heat on that small of a surface. well that is just for the egyption bowl i use. but the OP wants a shorter sessionl so he will use a bowl roughly the same size as mine. Pack it dense as hell with your fingers to slightly above or at the rim.LEAVE the hole where your thumb was.Compress the shisha with your foil slightly (which will fill in the center hole, but still allow airflow).Foil.Toothpick / holes to the BOTTOM for airflow.Enjoy.It works fine.My own second vid takes forever and its mixed with some AF (1/10th or so), however, I smoke tang on an egyptian frequently.Skip to 1:33 for buffering, you'll see the thumb pack.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBvr6YjMayk2:25 for clouds (not monster by any means, but a good smoke). sportsfan6216
go to the DIY section of the boards and search "phaking the phunnel"...... that's the best method i've seen for tang from an egyption.
spectrum055
I'm on the last of my Tang. I only had enough for an egyptian bowl fill and well I double foiled it .... and kinda wish I would have put ice in the base... I'm using two coals of coals that don't burn as hot as the AF coco's ...but it still seems to hot...though I usually with me smoking tang it only gets better after the top layer is crisp so the next coal round it should be smoking nice

It worked great, thanks for making that video... I'm smoking tang green tea w/ honey right now and it's the bomb. Flavor and clouds are on par with phunnel! The thumb in the middle is key to me, and you just finger-pack the hell out of it. The compressing with the foil just slightly below rim "fills" the middle fine. I've also found great sessions with Egyptians for Tangiers, the phunnels adds longevity (and many times more flavor, but not necessarily so).
