Scrappydoo
SO I had an excrutiating headache last night after smoking two bowls of AF Golden Grape. I have before after smoking, but it is rare. I hear different theories on cause--tobacco too much for me? (I usually smoke washed), heat too high, smoking too long, air leaks, bad shisha, bad food with shisha, sinus/post natal drip. Anyone hear suffer with headaches or have a theory on the cause? I don't smoke for buzz. It is common knowledge that I'm a buzz wussy. Last night I was starting to feel buzzy so I quit.Whatcha think? Canon
its the tobacco, something they use in it causes the headaches. personally i think its the dye.I cant smoke Starbuzz, AF (which is the worst for me), tonic, fusion, and some other brands that i cant think of now because of the headaches. good brands to smoke that dont give me headaches are tangiers and nakhla
Vladimir
Like any substance, too much nicotine can work a number on your system, particularly if you are not used to getting much of it.
Sonthert
For me, its when the hookah is ripping really good, uber-doomsday clouds...usually when the humidity goes up. I think it comes from the glycerine drying out your sinus cavities. Where the headache at the base of your skull comes from ,I don't know.
thehelios
I usually got head aches from poorly lit coals. Make sure they're red (even QL's) before smoking them.

nars2k
Honestly I was the same way I got killer headaches right after smoking, 1. You should make sure your hydrated, dehyration causes headaches. So keep some water around n drink some while smoking.2. The type of coals you use and how many coals you use also can cause headaches. Make sure you move the coals around. 3. Don't smoke for a prolonged time, take some breaks.4. Make sure you don't smoke on an empty stomache.Follow those and you will be good
NIGHTS OF BAGHDAD
also not sure what kind of coals your using, but always make sure they are fully lit before putting them on a bowl..i know sometimes when the coals are dieing out and your in a rush to keep the bowl going you lit some coals real fast and throw them on..and i dont mean you in particular but im just saying its what people sometimes do
delSol_si
I get headaches a lot from smoking. Really bad ones too. Kinda why I don't smoke as much anymore. I use CH QL coals and mush mentioned in chat the other day that QL coals tend to produce headaches, so suggested switching to nattys. You might try that too.also, if you are like me and hookah is the only thing you smoke, and you only smoke that a few times a week at most, the nicotine probably gets to you as well. rj_skillz
I use to get alot of headaches when I first started off smoking shisha that was years back. I remember not having enough liquid at the time of smoking gave me a massive headache. I always like drinking ice cold water, I think it helps me!Also, never smoke on a empty stomach! The restaurants they have here in London..if you guys ever come here, go to Edgeware road. Most people usually have a really big dinner and end it off with shisha and mint tea which is a great combo! Smoking on a empty stomach usually makes me more dizzy and feel like puking to be honest. Another factor I can think of is too much heat as someone has said before..! Try smoking with 1 less coal than you are having right now. Hope this helps. Edited December 4, 2009 by rj_skillz
Rayneuki
I use to have that problem when going to my local hookah bar. Found out it was the whole "AMAGAID NO FRESH AIR" thing hitting me. You'll suffocate yourself if you don't have a good air supply going. Also I can't smoke QL's , they actually cause me to vomit violently. Friends don't let friends smoke with QL's

shesha1
In my experience, all hookah related headaches came from bad hoses (air leaking) or not making sure all seals are tight.

How does that work? The most obvious cause of a headache would be carbon monoxide issues with the coals. From there, it might be an allergy, sinus, dehydration or nicotine problem. Scrappydoo
These are all great responses, THANK YOU! I'll look at all of it! I've been smoking almost 7 years, probably have had these less than 10 times, but after last night I want to do everything I can to make sure it NEVER happens again! I was ready to chop of my own head!
Arcane
i got one last night....digitalbass and i were smoking for over 4 hours and i got a headache right in the back of my head. it feels like my brain is trying to pull away from the back of my skull....at first, i always though this was a bad buzz or something...but, now i think it may be related more to dehydration, since i don't usually drink anything when i smoke nowadays... Codename067
It's the Nicotine.Stop right away when you get the headache, and see how long it took to get it since the first puff. The next time you smoke, you will go longer with out a headache. You just slowly adjust to it.

I have also wondered if it's how you sit when you're smoking, causing tension in that area! Maybe a combination of all the factors?

boomerboom5000
there are a few thing's that cause your head to hurt but the worse of all of them is by far the burning of the tobacco.when smoking hookah ,you aren't really smoking, your inhaling vapors.nothing is actually burning unless you heat the bowl up to much.if your bowl heats up to much and becomes harsh then take all your cowls off the bowl and clear the chamber then put only a couple of the cowls back on the bowl until it starts to smoke again.if the issue keeps happening then you may have already over cooked your bowl and get to start all over again.also if u load the bowl to high then the shisha will be touching the screen and be burning that way so don't over load your bowls.this is the main reason for your head feeling like its in a vise. if you have allergies, the burnt smoke can cause sinuses to fill up and press against your brain and make you want to die, even if it means burning to death.ya,there that bad.i keep some saline spray in the bathroom and use it right away when i get my suicidally bad headaches(what the fuck,my letters got bigger for some reason after i copied and pasted the word saline.oh well, sorry).i over came the headache bullshit through my love of smoking hookah so don't give up,in your next life time you might be one of those health nuts that doesn't smoke hookah so go deal with the pain till you find a way to smoke without it.life is to short not to. one more thing,i just got a nammor hose and some coco nara coals and im trying them both at the same time and oddly enough,my head is hurting a smug.what are the chances that it happen's as I'm writing about it.It could be the extra pull from the nammor or the new coal's.I usually use exotic's and decided to try some coco nara coal's so that may be it.this is a very important topic for allot of us so i will be keeping you all updated as soon as possible about how everything work's out. But now I don't get them often, when I do its usually because I smoked for too long, or didn't hydrate myself enough. I smoke everyday but not more than one bowl.
