Friend Felt Ill?

Recommended Posts

Well the topic says it all. We were sitting around in the Garage and I believe it was my friends second(?) time. Well after our two hour session he was complaining about a head ache and stomach ache.. what causes this? He was taking massive drags or anything. Probably smoked the least out of all of us. Could it just be because he is new to the whole 'hookah thing' ? Just curious because he really felt miserable. We ate dinner before and were pounding down the water. Just curious. I've never had this issue.

Thanks,
Eric

Go and read the responses on my "Hookah Headache" post, it might help. Apparently some people have problems with highly dyed tobaccos, some get headaches if they aren't drinking or eating enough. One mentioned air leakage and ventilation (probably a garage is not the best place! LOL!) which I have also found can be a problem if you smoke at some of the less informed cafes. Lastly, some of us are more sensitive to nicotine, so if he wants to smoke again, recommend he look for washed, lower nicotine tobaccos. I hope that helps, getting so sick on something you enjoy really sucks! wink.gif

Very valid argument you made Scrappy tongue.gif. I'm sure the garage was fine though, the garage door was open, but who knows! Thanks guys

Nicotine Rush

yup, nicotine, being his first time, probably wasnt drinking water or anything, smoking on empty stomach.. just tell him it will go away the more he smokes..dont let this deter him from hookah

Haha don't worry about that. He loves it, just not the way he felt after xD
He's a big boy, he knows he'll get used to it.

Well thank you all for the help, I'm going to sleep. Good night all!

Yes Shisha isn't that full of nicotine as far as I know, but... Think of it like alcohol... like a powerhour- it isn't the amount of alcohol in a power hour that gets you wasted, it is the steady and constant supply of it to the body. Regardless of nicotine levels, the 2 hour long session is different than any other nicotine related activity.

Why don't you just say it instead of telling me that I should've said it?

Not sure how he and specially you missed the "Hookah Headaches" thread, in which I clearly mentioned that smoking several times will eventually drive this problem away.

It's the Nicotine.

Stop right away when you get the headache, and see how long it took to get it since the first puff.

The next time you smoke, you will go longer with out a headache.

You just slowly adjust to it.

NoB, i think Codename's misunderstanding was this part: "just tell him it will go away the more he smokes"

i believe Codename was assuming that statement was directed at himself, instead of you directing toward the OP. don't worry though, i understood. i'm pretty good at the intarwebz...

OP: if your friend isn't used to hookah, a two-hour session is quite much...even with washed tobacco, if he's not accustomed to a nicotine buzz, he's gonna feel something. some people, like your friend, will feel ill. i know i did when i first smoked Nakhla. combine that with other stuff they're not used to like CO poisoning and oxygen deprivation...and you're in a bumpy road.

a few more sessions under his belt and the issues will either become less pronounced or go away completely.

It has to be the nicotine rush. Even if it was his first couple times it's clearly not the lack of food, or dehydration.

Probably a combination of Nicotine rush and oxygen deprivation. Don't forget to breath inbetween hits and to pace yourself. You don't have to suck the hose like its paying you too!

ok I am just chiming in to clear the whole nicotine thing up.

you receive more nicotine per gram of tobacco smoked from a cig than you do from shisha. however its like this you take 5 puffs of a cig (the amount the average smoker takes from one cig.) you get a fair amount of nicotine but if you do like i do and chain smoke taking hit after hit after hit untill its down to the filter without a breath inbetween you get more nicotine from that one cig (every puff contains it)

now when it comes to shisha there is less per gram but how many of us smoke only one gram? none of us. also how many of us only take 5 puffs off our hookah then say enough? none of us.

the nicotine you get depends on how many grams your smoking and how many puffs you take in the session.

now with that being said it is quite possible your friend had nicotine poisoning (and most of us do get it from hookah it is what causes the buzz. just because its called poisoning dose not mean its deadly altho enough of it in a short enough time span can be lethal)

however there are other factors that may have been at play
your friend may have had high blood pressure that was aggravated by the co2 or the nicotine or both. or he may have simply been smoking to fast and did not get enough oxygen. or it could have been your coals were not all the way lite when he started smoking. or he could have already been sick and not realized it until then. or you could have been using QL's and he was sensitive to them. (every brand of QL's I have ever tried has given me a headache.)

the only way to know for sure is the process of elimination.
