Wisdom Teeth...

So for the past week i've had an ear ache accompanied by the occasional head ache and even a bit of a migraine i don't like going to doctors... i'm one of those wait til the last minute where i can't stand the pain kind of people. Unfortunately that was Friday evening. While i was at work my whole right side of my face was ON FIRE...i could feel the heat but didn't look to see how bad it was.... of course i went about doing what i was doing...and soon the pain kicked in. So intense that my whole body was shaking pretty bad. I don't think i've ever been in that much pain....EVER. Well my boss told me i needed to go see a doctor... maybe even the hospital incase something was very wrong with me. So i waited a little bit and the pain never dulled... i decided maybe she was right. I get to the ER...and for whatever reason there wasn't anyone waiting....not a very typical sight at our hospital. Anyhow i got right in and the doctor came in and took a look...he said oh i see you have an ear ache...which i kind of figured and then he said do you still have your wisdom teeth and i said yes....well he took a peek and he said ohh.... here is your problem.

Turns out all 4 of my wisdom teeth are impacted and infected...and i have an ear ache sad.gif.
Moral of the story? Get your freaking wisdom teeth out asap.

I now have to call an oral surgeon tomorrow to make an appointment in the next 5 days. The doctor told me that if i don't do this i'll have to be on round after round of antibiotics(which i'll be on for the next 10 days).

Errrrrrrrr dry.gif

anyone wanna give me a little insight on what it's like to have all 4 of your wisdom teeth cut out...and of course the days following...i hate dentists....and i'm a bit worried even though i've been told they knock you out for the process...but i'm not a fan of pain in my mouth either...

discuss.

I had mine taken out, didn't hurt at all. I couldn't eat solid food for a day so I lived off of freeze pops and pudding. Took 4 days to recover, was fine after that.

It will depend on just how bad the impactions are, although judging from the pain your in they must be quite bad. Also the general position of the teeth will determine how intensive the actual surgery is. My removal wasn't horrible although although none of mine were impacted. My general advice is to heed the doctors orders down to the wire, no drinking through straws, no smoking, etc. You don't want to get a dry socket as they are certainly just as painful as what your going through right now and will require a wonderful follow up visit with the surgeon. Plan to take a few days off after the surgery, there will be lots of swelling and you'll look like a damn chipmunk that has all his food for the whole winter in his cheeks. The pain should be minimal with the wonderful pain meds they will provide, and please don't be shy to take them. As for the surgery itself they don't always knock you out, that will be something to be discussed with your oral surgeon. For my personal surgery they didn't knock me out until they got to tooth 3 because of the position of the tooth, I was under local anesthetics up until that point. I was back to work within a week of my surgery and really only needed 3 days off afterwards, although I took six just to let more of the swelling go down.

hopefully they will knock me out. all of mine kind of grow forward not so much up. which sucks and fucks up my other teeth which were perfect before these stupid things... apparently they will go back to where they were....or so i was told. also all of my roots curl up in every single tooth in my mouth...so that is another good reason to just knock me out and save us both some trouble lol.

I had all 4 out at once, bottom ones were impacted. The procedure was painless and I slept for the rest of day 1 and ended up not needing the pain drugs they gave me. Not a bad operation at all.

However, I did lose a sharp piece of jawbone and that worked its way up through my gums over the course of a few months. That was nasty - still didn't hurt though. That's a rare thing though, but it may happen.

They put me completely asleep to take mine out... Gave my hydrocodone for the the pain. I made the mistake of eating a sincronasada at a Mexican restaurant the very next day and got my sockets infected. Had to call in to get more hydrocodone... For me, it was not a fun experience.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out during high school.
When they were doing the X-Rays, they also found out that I had a tooth growing INSIDE the roof of my mouth.
It was only then that I realized my palate was in fact very uneven.
They had to remove that as well as my wisdom teeth in one surgery.
When I had my surgery done, I was completely knocked the fuck out.
They gave me my IV and then the Anesthesiologist inject his magic into the line.
The last thing I remember was him pushing the plunger in on the syringe and the next thing I knew, I was waking up feeling drugged out of my mind.
They wheel-chaired me to the car and my poor stepmother had to carry my ass into the house.
I slept off the rest of my drugs and when I woke up I was hungry but I couldn't eat until my sockets stopped bleeding.
Also, I think I remember not being able to open my jaw all the way for a while.
I couldn't eat certain foods for awhile.
I don't remember exactly what it was I could and could not eat but I am sure someone will go over that with you.
They gave me this little syringe thing to shoot water into my sockets to flush out the food that would get stuck in there.
The only painful part of the whole process that I can remember was the IV.
They gave me some painkillers but I didn't really take very many of them.
This was partly due to not really needing them but mostly due to my stepmother being paranoid I would become a Vicodin addict just from taking my painkillers as prescribed...
You will probably get a lot of blood and blood clots in your mouth for a while and it sucks not being able to eat certain things but it really wasn't that bad of an experience for me.
It was several years ago so I don't really remember what kind of time frame this all took place in.
Having the sockets that you will need to wash out lasted several months I think but other than that I don't remember how long it took for everything else to return to normal.

Hopefully my story will give you an idea as to what you might expect.
I am not a dentist but it sounds like you have it pretty bad so you might get lucky and get to be knocked out like I was.
There might have been some pain involved that I don't remember but as far as I can recall, having the IV put in my arm was really as bad as it got.
I REALLY hate IVs though...

Good luck!

It is one of those things that for approximately two to four days you are going to think you are the unluckiest SOB around... a week later you will get over it happy.gif. For me the absolute worst part was having to swallow pills after the surgery while actively bleeding... that was bar none the most horrible part about it.

I recently had my gall bladder out, it was one of those "wow that other thing wasn't so bad" experiences happy.gif, now I am just terrified for what the next one of those experiences will be!

All 4 of mine were impacted when they were removed. Mine was def not the greatest, speediest recovery but after 4 days I was back at work and almost eating solid foods. I'm pretty sure if they are impacted they will put you to sleep. It's very strenuous on your body/mouth so it would only make sense. The day mine were done and the next 24hrs I have no real recollection of anything that happened, except getting up from the chair or whatever and walking outside and sitting down in the car. After that it was a ton of pain pills and gauze and in and out of consciousness. Just don't drink beer for a week or so after it's done (mouth yeast infection) and try not to smoke, don't want dry sockets.

Tried to edit my post, but for some reason it wouldn't work. Anywho....
In March my roommate had his out, and I think maybe 2 were impacted, but that night he ate a burger and was smoking.... So it seems to depends a lot on the person. He just cleaned the holes thoroughly with the syringe sprayer thing the oral surgeon gave him and was fine eating whatever. He never got dry sockets or an infection.

Totally sucks!

Had all for of mine come in sideways pushing all my teeth forward, couldn't eat, constant "what I thought" ear infections.

First surgery I ever had... quite fun.

Do not smoke afterwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a milkshake through a straw.... Dry Sockets.... and you think your jaw hurts now. Plus the crap they stuff down there to fix it... tastes like what would expect burning rubber and dung would taste like.... and yes everything will taste like that...

Good Luck. Your in my thoughts and prayers.

i had all 4 of mine taken out at one, took about 45min, and they put me under. 3 of the teeth were recovering ok, but 1 of them gave me really really bad pain, after 2 days of suffering, i went back to the dentist and they told me i had a dry socket, so they had to put a medicated gause in there. so after a a couple of days if you are in serious pain go back and get the gause put it, it felt a millioon times better. My wisdom teeth were jacked...i actually woke up halfway through the procedure and they couldn't put me out again, so i was awake and feeling nearly every cut, saw, and pull for the last two teeth...sucked

after they were all out, there wasn't really any pain...so much so, that my friend (the guy who is supposed to be responsible for my well being immediately AFTER surgery) decided that we should hit up the chinese buffet on the way home...so we did...i think i had 4 full plates of food, with a few glasses of coke sipped from a straw...bad idea

a few days later, dry socket...i wanted to rip my jaw from my face....

oh gawd I almost threw up reading that! When i went in i asked them do people ever wake up in the middle of the surgery and she was like oh it really doesnt happen all that often and i was like eep!

My surgery went fine, ddnt need any pain medication which was good because vicodin gives me night terrors and its terrible for your liver. I was eating solid food on the third day. Dont drink any alcohol since it can thin out your blood, had a friend do that and he was rushed the ER the next night because he swallowed so much blood. Hope you arent to nervous after all the horror stories. Waking up from being drugged is actually an excuse to be super weird for the next half an hour. And make sure your boyfriend pampers you!

I got all 4 done at the same time. I went thru my pain meds very quickly it hurt every day/night. the worst part is the holes, they take months and months to patch up and food gets stuck in there 24/7

Oh yeah that reminds me, that little curved syringe they give is so fun... annoyed the hell out of my little brother from across the room with that one.

Wisdom teeth surgery isn't all that bad.

I had all four of mine taken out at once. All of them were impacted, growing toward my back molars. The doctor knocked me out for my surgery, so I'd assume it'd be the same for you. I don't remember even going under, or being asleep. I just remember that time HAD elapsed, and I was sort of woosie afterwards. As for the pain...really, it wasn't that bad. However, my gum surgery was a different story.

If you've never gone under, just be aware that some people experience nausea after waking up. I'm not saying you will, but just be aware that that is a possibility.

After about four days, you'll be feeling up to eating some normal foods again, but I'd stay away from stringy foods. You don't want to get anything in those sockets! Follow the other advice on here, and you'll be golden.

Do not drink from straws or any kind of sucking device, you'll get dry socket and wish you would die. This includes hookah. Also, stay away from hot drinks/foods for about 4 days for the same reason.
