Sin on Sunday
i like the idea, it shows new members who are seeking advice who the most knowledgeable or approachable people are. if they see that someone has very positive feedback they will be inclinedto trust that person, and vice versa
Thats all nice and good, but when I first started to post on this forum I looked at the stars and number of posts to see who I should listen to and really take their advice seriously. In a way, it shows who is bullshitting and knows what they're talking about. I'm just one person who's done this, I can guarantee theres a lot more out there. I'm not saying this is a perfect system or that we should do this, by any means, I'm just saying people are going to take this seriously in time.
I would say that in general the people who end up with the highest reputation are the most knowledgeable, are on more than others, more helpful, etc. Yes some people whore for reputation but I think it would work out fine

I think that if this is going to stay you should be allowed to see who is reping you and they should have to give a reason why they are reping you. It takes 10 sec to put +1 rep for helping me out or -1 for false info.
Charley
I am failing to understand how this can be a bad thing? even if someone "post whores" to get rep they have to still post useful information to get positive rep right? so how is that a bad thing? isn't that what we want? Arcane
I have been giving negative rep to ppl dishing out bad info or adding posts not benefitting threads.... my hopes is that people will actually contribute REAL CONTENT to the threads....instead of random lol's or what not... yes, i've given negative rep to my buds...and dropped the rep of ppl whom i think were abusing the system....i do like the rep system, since i think its a quick reference on who's advice i can frequently rely on..... i dont use it as a popularity contest at all...
i totally agree with jay here, ive been doing the same thing. and ya, i even give my buds a "-" rep if they deserve it. oh, and look at stuie's profile and jay's profile, both of them are extremely helpful members and both of them have a higher number of reps. in the end, even with the bullshit "+/-" i think it will work out for the better. also, ive noticed everyone is still at neutral, when does that change? Arcane
Oh, to piggyback on sin and dizz's thought.....when i first joined....i used to use post counts as measure of someone's knowledge.... i mean, if they post a lot...they must offer a lot of advice.....i quickly learned that this isnt always the case....some of the best advice has been given out by people with very few posts....foibled again, is one example that is full of great advice yet doesnt have thousands of post....a rep system can identify these individuals a lot better....
jeremyk
i dont know about this rep thing what if people just start clicking +'s or -'s just to f with someones rep i dont think it should be used to decide anything cause how reliable is its truthfulness just my 2 cents
