Giant Ninja Robot
Looks like Michigan is on the cusp of signing a smoking ban into effect. http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/approval-of-michigan-smoke-free-legislation-is-historic-win-for-health-79004462.html How do these bans affect hookah smokers? Can I sit outside on the porch and smoke? I'm assuming this is a public place law and does not affect citizens private homes to that degree but haven't had to learn up on this before. How does a smoking ban affect the average home hookah smoker? I'm glad this law is going into effect as pertains to cigarettes but hesitate anytime the government decides what is good for the people on such a large scale. Does this affect smoking a cigar in my backyard? What unforeseen blanket effects have these laws had in other states? Vladimir
Don't assume... Washington's smoking ban was ridiculous. I technically cannot smoke in my home as I technically run a business out of my home. Edited December 11, 2009 by Vladimir
nars2k
They cannot directly place a ban on smoking in your home. It's most likely you cannot smoke within a 100 feet ( or some other number) of a business or public area.
Helix746
dont worry about it. you can still smoke in public and on/in your private property, this is just a ban from smoking inside, places such as restaurants, bars, workplaces will now be smoke free. This mostly pertains to cigarettes anyway. the only exception is you can still smoke on casino floors. both of my states (Maryland is home, and Pennsylvania for school) have these laws, it will not effect you, unless you enjoy smoking in bars. As for hookah lounges, they may be able to get an exemption since they are tobacco providers but laws with hookah lounges are strange. just look at mush and how it is in his state, his hookah bar might be shut down while cigar stores/lounges are fine. I could look more closely at the bill to let you know about hookah lounge/tobacco shop exemptions but i dont think its necessary. Bottom line is that you are free to smoke hookah wherever you want as long as it isn't inside a public building. So smoking on your private property is totally legal. Pretender85
Huh, can't even smoke at our casinos over here in Illinois..but it has never phased me because I don't smoke cigs and I always hated trying to see through the hanging cloud hovering 4' off the ground at the local bar Either way you're fine w/ hookah at your own place. LZ22
Its most certainly a ban for smoking in public areas as already stated (businesses, bars, etc). Its not going to be a ban to smoke in your own home (I don't think theyre crazy enough to stomp that hard on people's rights.....yet). Many states have one already. In my state you cant smoke in any public gathering like bars and restaurants. The exception is you can smoke inside a business if it generates 80% of its revenues from tobacco (aka hookah lounge). So doesn't affect me one bit!
Vladimir
Yes it will not effect us, yes cigarettes are gross let's throw them to the dogs... yes, let's not worry about it. You think they have any intentions of stopping? Don't kid yourselves, the entire goal here is to stamp out nicotine and tobacco consumption (and any habit they label as "unsafe") COMPLETELY- even if they have to do it step by step. nars2k
Yeah I live in cali. In the city I live in they banned smoking within a 100 feet of any business or public area such as a library. But hookah bars that were already there got "grandfathered in" because they were there long before the law.
SloppyJoe
That's fucking stupid. Why couldn't Michigan just keep letting each county decide whether or not to let people smoke in public places? That bitch Granholm...

Hookah S Moka
Ya up the canada way the ban has been around for a year or 2 now, its basically saying any business is illegal to smoke inside and if caught wouild face up to a $5000 fine
mix_tape
Just like Hookah S Moka said, I have found it nice when I'm out at a bar or something like that but since I mainly smoke at home there has been no issues. We still have hookah lounges here the rules seem to be it has to be herbal shisha and before the ban people used to smoke cigarettes and cigars but not anymore you do it outside I believe 4/5 feet away from the entrance. Vladimir
Yea as long as you aren't trampling on the rights I actually participate in it's okay... fuck everyone else's rights, they can go smoke their cancer sticks somewhere else... Hypocrisy abound!
