Coil Burners Crust

Recommended Posts

So, reciently I had to replace one of my coil burners because it broke. What happened is over time it looked like some of the coals burned off onto the coils and caused the burner to warp. I tried to bend it back into place and *crack* it snapped in half.

I was wondering if anyone else has this problem and if there is anything I can do to prevent it from happening again?

the other day my coal burner kept electrocuting me. I had to turn off the burner for a second when i went to flip the coals or take them off. It took getting electrocuted five or six times to figure that out

Lol, not trying to be an asshole word-Nazi, but your misuse of the word "Electrocution" made your post pretty funny.
FYI, Electrocution is defined as death caused by electric shock.
Just thought you would like to know.

Yea, I tried to get one of the portible burners the other day at CVS but they dident have any. Ill just have to find a walgreens.

And as for wiping it off with a wet paper towel, whenever I try to get it off it just ripes the towel up and stays on the burner. Idk what to do :scratch_one-s_head:

don't leave your coil burner outside if you light the coals outside – the weather will destroy them. i lost 2 that way.

cleaning them is good, every now and then i'll use a wire brush to scrape the crud off every now and again.

if all else fails go snag another one for 10 bucks. how often exactly, maybe 2 years? not too bad.

This happens it's a fact of life. Best thing like NoB said clean after each use and don't light the coils in the same place on the burner. Light them in different spots. Each time.

Thats what kills my burners. You are crystalizing the metal around the ceramic core of the coil. The metal isn't used to having something as hot as a coal sitting on it. We use steel wool to clean the coils every day before using them but that only delays the inevitable.

Didn't think about steel wool!!!

I use a wet paper towel ball every night after I am done lighting coals. I am still replacing... every 8 months or so. The coil on my stove lights faster. But the replacement coils are $15-$25 at Home Depot, depending on brand. But I have gone through one of the Walgreens one already. On number 2. They are cheaper but the coils are spaced far apart so lighting takes a bit longer.

Hmm, good idea. I usually end up throwing them all in the same space everytime. I guess if it ruins it you might as well make the whole thing ruined instead of just a section.

Hmm, never thought about that with the heat getting so hot. And I might give that steel wool a try. That and the walgreens burners. Hell for $9 its worth it. I think the coil I got from Lowes was like $13.

Lol, sorry, I envisioned you being electrocuted and then subsequently resuscitated repeatedly by your coil burner and it was notably funny to me.

Back on topic, I got one of the infamous Walgreens 10 dollar coil burners and it works wonderfully.
When I got mine it was on sale for 7 or 8 bucks.
Looking back, I kind of wish I would have grabbed a second one at that price.
At only 10 dollars, if I can get at least a year out of it than I am happy.
That is less than 1 dollar per month of investment...
I would definitely recommend buying one if you can find one.
I had to try 3 different Walgreens to find one but it was worth it.
Throw in an extension cord and you can light natural coals pretty much anywhere in or around your house.
If you can't find one locally, I believe you can order them online.

i was actually thinking of wrapping the coils in tinfoil and putting the coal on there when lightning, i know it will keep it cleaner, but not sure how much longer the lighting process will take..
