A Little Bit Of Tangiers

Ok. I just got some Tangiers horchata last weekend. Here's the setup I tried today.

Hookah- 32" 3 hose KM Trimetal
Fluid in base-water and ice
Bowl-small egyptian with windcover combo+screen
Coal- one 1" finger coal
Acclimation: 8 hrs, then stirred up the juices with a small fork.

When I packed the bowl, I didnt pack it to the rim. I only packed it so it was half way full. I didn't want to sit and smoke for a long time. Here's the results: No buzz, a little flavour, and thin clouds.

What was it that I did wrong? I'm thinking it isn't possible to smoke a little bit of tangiers at a time. Do I have to fill the whole bowl each time I want to smoke? Could it be my packing method? I've seen the You tube videos on packing tangiers in an egyptian bowl, and I followed them, except I didn't add so much. When I fork it in, am I supposed to tamp it down a little? I figured I wouldn't have to do that since I didn't pack a whole bowl.

Also when aclimating the shisha, do I have to aclimate the whole tub, or just the little bit I want to smoke? The last time, I aclimated the whole tub.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would say since you are using an egyptian bowl, give a fluffy pack a try...pack to the rim of the bowl, but dont press it down real tight, have it in there so it is "fluffy"....try using a second coal and see if that increases the smoke density. If it gets harsh, simply take the coals off for a few minutes and then continue the bowl with one coal

Ok. I'll pack it fluffy this tme, to the rim, and I'll try 2 coals. I'm nervous about burning the shisha though. I did that on Saturday and it was horrible.[img]http://www.hookahforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif[/img]

theres a reason hookah bars use foil and not screens...screens are more economical and would save money, but they are just horrible.

yea, it has something to do with your heat management as well as packing. If you plan on smoking more often you will want to buy an tangiers phunnel bowl. You will thank me after you buy that bowl.

As for the packing, normally you want to pack it tight with a phunnel bowl but with an egyptian you want to prob pack it loose or else you will end up blocking the holes.

The best thing to do with the heat management is start hot and work down. When I smoke tangiers I usually start off with 3 coals than go down to 2 as it gets hotter. You can always take them off if it seems like its getting hot. It just takes some playing around with but over time you will get everythng down.

has other guys mentioned, first you need to get a tangiers small phunnel bowl, for now you can use and get away with a egyptian bowl..but i wouldnt keep using it for long if you really want to get the most out of your shisha, next you cant just fill it halfway or 3/4's of the way or a 1/4 of the way depending on how much time you have..shisha doesnt work like that..especially tangiers..shes very picky..you gotta pack the bowl full and pack her tight..and toss the metal screen in the garbage..still with foil..noting beats it..so pack the bowl full to the top, and pack it tight then use toothpicks to poke holes go all the way in..poke nice big deep holes..tangiers likes to breath..heres a packing vid by the owner of tangiers showing how to pack it..

if your worried about waisting shisha do this, when you have to go just take off the coals and remove the tinfoil..and remove the top used part of the shisha and then scoop out the unused portion but do not put it back in with the rest of the shisha, get a sandwich bag and put the shisha in there and make sure you seal it tight, later when you want to use take a small amount of shisha from the original bag and mix it in with the portion you removed from the bowl thats in the sandwich bag and give it a good swirl..mix it up real good and then load it back into the bowl..your good to go man..

I didn't know that could be done, especially with Tangiers. I'll start doing that. Once I get all of my christmas shopping done, I'll look into getting that phunnel bowl. I've been eying that white one for some time now.

If you plan on packing it into an Egyptian, pack it firmly in there with holes all the way through the foil and bottom holes in the bowl. Big holes. You want some room for air to get through the shisha. Use half as much heat as you might think you need. Then step up slowly until you get nice fluffy clouds. This is of course until you get a phunnel.

ditch the egyptian bowl, and pack a phunnel to the brim. You put down the money for tangiers so might as well use a phunnel and smoke it right. Also dont try and skimp out on the bowl, pack it full and put whatever you dont use back in the tub.

I love horchata, but I'm kind of sick of it...went through about a kilo of it in the past 3months, not to mention how much of it I smoked over the summer

I dont know how a half pack works with an egyptian...but its possible to do with a phunnel....just pack it halfway, but you have to compress it as much as possible...

you'll need more heat to overcome the gap of air, as wel....

also, you've seen the videos and read the tutorials...and yet, you still decided not to follow directions....then you ask what you did wrong....

am i the only one that thinks thats a bit.....odd?

Update: I packed it fluffy, ditched the screen, poked bigger hokes, and I got it to work! I can feel the buzz and I have decent clouds. Thanks guys! Now that I got it to smoke correctly, I'll think I'll invest in some Coconara coals and a small Tangiers phunnel.
