no longer welcome
Hey guys, I think it's time I get something other than my ps2 (can i even sell that?) for my kids 6/3/1 also, for me. The games i like are racing like NFS and GT. I need stuff for the kids to play as well. Do I go PS3 or Xbox? I want to keep the budget low, I usually get everything at costco but can I get better deals elsewhere. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks John

KyleTheJustin
I was a PS man myself until I reached the age of reason and bought a 360. In all seriousness, however, it's all about preference. There are a lot, and I mean a LOT of games out there that are multi-platform anymore, so it's mostly up to what you think looks the best/hear is the best. I love my 360, but I would never be opposed to someone handing me a PS3;) The best part of the PS3, at least in my opinion, would be the Blu-ray player if you're into that kind of stuff. As far as catering to both the progressive needs of your kids and what you may be interested in, a 360 may well be your best choice. But, again, check out some videos on Youtube about different racing games and make your choice accordingly. From what I understand, the Blu-ray player on the PS3 is pretty bomb. Just sayin'

rhineholt
Like Kyle up there said, it's all about preference. I have a 360. I've had it for 4 years. It still works as good as new. Sure, the 360's can get the red ring of death, but you can just send that in. One thing that I noticed is that the 360 controller is kind of big for a 6 year olds hand. I noticed this because my gf has a little brother and i brought it over there once. He could barely hold it. Hha.

So basically, they aren't going to be making DVD's anymore, just blurays. I hope that's right and made sense..

KyleTheJustin
lol John, you should feel normal. Bluray is essentially an enchanced version of a DVD. The picture quality is better, the sound is better, and the overall "movie experience" is better. It all came about when HD TVs began exploding onto the market. Bluray does make a huge difference, but it still didn't deter me away from a 360. Good point about the 360s controllers. They are rather big (not as big as the OG Xbox ones, though. JEEEEESUS those were huge). That's what she said.
Don't do it! Xbox all the way baby! The only reason to get a PS3 was the Blu-Ray, now Blu players are down to like $100 so that's hardly a big seller now. The Xbox problems are pretty much taken care of today, and the machines out there these days are far superior to what was first released (both in stability, and in power for the consumer). foibled again
Make sure to get the slim PS3 with the 120gb hard drive. If you want to save money, I would recommend ordering one from Amazon so you don't pay tax and get free shipping.

Helix746
both are fairly similar. but i will make a list of what i think. PS3 1. Blu-Ray (highest quality movie you can get, if you have a high definition tv this is a must) (also it plays regular dvds in higher quality then normal) 2. Internet browser (not really that special but i think its cool i can go on the internet and surf Hookah forum from my ps3) 3. re-chargeable controllers (no battery's) 4. Free online multi-player 5. smaller nicer controller Games: You said you like racing games, the ps3 has grand turnismo where xbox does not. Little Big Planet (you and your kids will love it), I dont think that ps3 has as many games but in my opinion the games they do have are of higher quality, more of an everyone console (More kids games) Xbox 360 1. Xbox live (better online multi-player) (you have to pay for it though) 2. More games, also more exclusives 3. big clunky controller (requires battery's) 4. only plays regular dvds Games:Forza motor sport is a good racing game, i dont know as far a children s games, i believe xbox is more of a mature console. i have a ps3 and love it, i also think its the right choice for you. If you want more comparisons, Comparison Article/url], this article is fairly unbiased
Chreees
PS3 120GB Slim, John. Reason why you shouldn't get the 250GB is because it's not worth paying the extra money for. You can always upgrade the HDD later on for much cheaper. Hell, you can get a 500GB HDD for cheaper than paying the extra money for the 250GB. Either way, with all that they PS3 can do, it's definitely a winner.

delSol_si
I'm with stuie on this one, I'd go with one of those old 8-bit NES systems. But, if you want a newer system, maybe the wii? I am not much of a gamer myself, but it looks like the wii might be kinda fun at times, plus you can get all the old-school 8-bit games on it. dizzbizz
I'd say PS3 but its all about preference. The games that are exclusive to Xbox 360 are way better than the ones that are exclusive to PS3. But PS3 had a better processor and theres a lot more going on in the games than the 360's. But like the guys stated before, the PS3 comes with a lot of features that the 360 doesn't. I have a 360 and I love it, my friend has both and he plays his 360 more than his PS3 slim. If you like watching high definition movies I'd go with a PS3.
rhineholt
I was gonna say something about the Wii. Like del and stuie said, I think a Wii would work the best. To me, it's more kid friendly and it's more interactive then ps3 and 360.
foibled again
why 120gb and not 250?
The 120gb is the only variant the new slim model is available in. It is quieter, uses less power, and can also bitstream HD audio if you decide to use it. It gives up the ability to run Linux and does not have PS2 backwards capability, but that was dropped a while ago unless you can still find a Metal Gear Solid PS3 bundle. The hard drive can be changed out later if you feel the need to expand and it's fairly easy to do. I would recommend Little Big Planet: Game of the Year Edition if you want to play with your kids. It's currently on sale for $50 on Amazon and in some Walmarts if you can find it. I know the one up in Portola Hills has it, not sure about Aliso Viejo or San Clemente. Charley
in my opinion (which dose not mean much) I see the xbox as being more adult oriented (controlers designed to fit adult hands more mature game titles ect..) the ps3 is a midway console (trying to gear its self to both side adult and child oriented leaning heavier on the adult gaming side) and the wii is more family/children oriented leaning more to kids with educational games and family friendly no blood and guts games (yes i know there are quite a few but not nearly as many as the other two) I myself lean in the direction of the wii for a couple reasons even without the blood and guts the games are fun and actually moving to play adds a whole new element into the game allowing you to immerse yourself better into the virtual world of the game. all of which like i said is my personal view but with small children around I would go with the wii.
