A Sad. Sad Day

I crashed on my bike. Date: Dec 15, 2009

Long story short..

Went out on my bike on a lovely Cali day, had nothing in mind but cruising to clear my head before work. 10-15 minutes in, I decide to roll back home [work time was coming up]. So I decide to make a left turn.

I was behind some guy, he was trying to make a left turn, I was going no more than 10-15 mph, thinking that he will take that left turn. All of the sudden he hits the breaks because the light turns yellow, I didn't have time to stop, and hitting the breaks was not not an option [because they would lock and I would end up under his ca, any rider would know that]. I swerved right, I hit his rear bumper, fell and got tossed across to the right lane..then some lady with an SUV stopped a few feet away from my face, went out of her car and started screaming.

Too surreal.

I've never come so close to "dying" before, looking up and seeing a 2-ton vehicle a few feet away from you...:Guillotine_anim:

Anyone else experience near-death situations that ended up with nothing but minor repairs and a few hundred bucks to pay?

I'm glad to hear that you made it out ok, my brother got into an accident on his bike a few months ago, so hearing about stuff like this hits home pretty hard. Thankfully it was a very low speed collision, but I was still pretty shaken up when I heard that he got into an accident. He ended up with only a bit of soreness in his shoulder from hitting the ground, but he lost the bike due to a bent frame.

Get that thing fixed! Yamaha makes some sexy bikes.

I've surely had a few close calls in the 22 years I've been alive, but by far the closest came when I was 7. Alot of the story is more what I was told about what had happened, not what I remember. But in 1994 my dad purchased Toyota Supra Single Turbo that he had worked on immediately and was pushing about 450hp in, about 6 months after he bought it we were in quite the accident. I was riding in it with him and we were sitting stopped at a red light, the light turn green and my dad took his foot off the brake and we began to move forward. At the same time some jackass in an BMW M3 came roaring through the intersection at 70mph on a redlight and hit us square in passenger side right at the engine bay. He tore the front end completely off of the Supra and missed broadsiding me in the passenger seat by about 8 inches. Neither my Dad or myself were hurt at all, not even a scratch, the driver of the BMW broke his leg. My dad took the insurance money and bought a Toyota Land Cruiser....

Wow, I am sincerely glad to hear that you weren't seriously injured.
My first car purchase was from a guy who had to sell it due to being in a motorcycle accident that left him physically incapable of driving stick shift.
He was just starting to be able to drive automatics again when I talked to him.
He was a really cool guy and it was genuinely sad to see him struggle to walk and shit.
It was also sad to see him have to sell a car that he had obviously put a lot of work and care into as it was over 12 years old at the time and in practically new condition.

It was a '94 BMW 325is E36.
It was a dark grey coupe with black interior.

He got it from his father who was the parts manager or something like that for BMW.
It was friggin flawless.
I don't remember exactly how many miles it had, but it was at least 90k.
My grandfather helped me buy it and he said that car drove like it was brand new.

I've never ridden a motorcycle though.
I would like to buy one someday when I can afford it.
What kind of bike is yours?

E36's are classics, one of my favorites. Do you still have that ride?

I've got a 03 Yamaha R1. 1000cc, 150 horse. Thing's a beast! I put some slicks on it...and man..especially on warm days, I feel like I am glued to the ground. Being on a bike out-weighs sitting in a comfortable seat in the nicest car for me. You feel like a bird on the bike. When you get some money, get yourself a 250cc, and you will get an idea what I am talking about. I jumped from no experience to 1000cc and I am more glad than ever.

Well, I don't fully blame the person I hit. I blame myself as well.

Now to answer your question about why I was so close. I was planning on taking that left turn too. I thought this ass infront of me would go ahead and take that yellow, but he didn't.

I was a little too close. I just barely hit him. If I had another half second, literally, I would've completely avoided him, by a foot, but it would have been avoided.

Lesson learned though. Keep your distance. This is my first fall on my first and only 1-liter bike, I've been riding for a little over a year.

What do you ride?

back in july i was riding to my finacee's. It was hailing, but i had ridden 3 hours and was no more than a mile away, why stop now? I cant see anything. This light turns red, guy in front of me slams on his brakes even though its wet and slippery. I know theres no where to go so i lay over my bike on its left side. I get the bike up and find my saddle bag to be completely destroyed. I grab my backpack off the ground, which contains my laptop and some other expensive stuff. (like a wedding ring). I get on a ride about a half-mile. (i had to make sure that i didnt hit anything anyone else owned since i dont have my endorsment, i didnt want the cops to show up) So after a half-mile i realize my left leg is pretty stingy. I look down and its covered in blood from the knee to mid-thigh. Once i get there i get my pants off and i actually only had about a half-dollar size scrape on my knee, but it was going crazy.
But all-in-all i lived.
Im glad to know you are ok also.

Same here man, good to know nothing worse happened.

I'm greatful I only paid a few hundred bucks to the guy I hit. He was a cool guy, an ass hole for hitting the breaks on yellow, but cool enough to not get police or insurance invovled.

Live to ride another day.

Ya, I love the E36 too.
It is a bitch when it comes time to replace something, but it is wonderful to drive.
Unfortunately, I don't have that particular car anymore.
I was speeding in the right lane of a 3 lane blvd.
The only car anywhere near me was a woman in a Toyota SUV who was ahead of me in the far left lane.
She decided she was going to sweep 2 lanes to make a right turn without signaling and going far slower than I, and probably even the legal speed limit, cutting me off.
She entered my lane right in front of me, I slammed on my brakes, and tried to jump into the middle lane.
Unfortunately, I was unable to avoid her and collided with her.
I probably shouldn't have been speeding, but I still blame her as this whole thing could have been avoided if she was paying attention and at least signaled.
Although I blame her, I still kick myself in the ass for not having been able to avoid it, which I could have had I known better than to assume she wouldn't do something stupid.
The good news is that I got enough money from her insurance company to buy another E36.
It was a better deal being much cheaper than my first one and still in pretty good condition, but it was nothing like my last car.
That last car was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Needless to say, I drive a lot more cautiously now.

I am actually interested in getting a dual-sport bike.
I feel the urge to own a motorcycle as well as owning something that is off-road capable, having only ever owned or driven cars, so buying a dual-sport would kill both of those birds with one stone.
I live in Nevada and we have a shit ton of wonderful uninhabited desert just waiting to be explored :P
The Kawasaki KLR650 is the one that seems to most appealing to me with what little experience and knowledge I have about motorcycles.
The Yamaha DRZ400 looks interesting as well.
Ideally, I would like to buy a BMW, KTM, or Husqvarna, but those are significantly more expensive so a Japanese bike would probably be my first simply because it is more affordable.
A supermoto sounds fun as realistically I would probably be driving on paved streets 90% of the time, so I think it would be cool to have 2 sets of wheels so I can swap out to dirt tires when I feel like going on an adventure.

I'm glad you (and everyone else for that matter) more or less walked away okay. I pretty much avoid driving on December 15th at all costs. Weird coincidence but last year I slid over black ice past a stop sign and was t-boned by a pickup truck going 40. Luckily I'm still alive.
